With all the announcements and planning for a successful CAT 2010, it seems the count down has already begun. With almost four months to go, you really need to plan your preparation strategy and execute it accordingly. In this article of MBAUniverse.com, we will provide you the plan to study for the month of July, when it will be approximately four months left for CAT. Sidharth Balakrishna, CAT expert, author and IIM Calcutta alumnus gives you the study plan for the three sections of CAT exam, Quantitative Ability, Verbal Ability and Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning.
Quantitative Ability
Firstly you need to figure out the topics covered under the Quantitative Ability section such as Arithmetic, Algebra, Mensuration, Geometry, Speed-Time-Distance etc. Balakrishna mentions that you should practice enough questions from all these topics. “Do 25 to 30 questions daily covering all aspects of Quantitative Ability - Algebra, arithmetic, geometry, Mensuration, speed-time-distance questions etc.”
Verbal Ability
For this section, reading is the best way to prepare. Hence, Balakrishna suggests reading articles everyday covering every possible topic. “Read at least five to six articles daily, preferably within 30 minutes or so. You should make sure that there is sufficient variety in what they read since they can get passages on any subject-history, geography, sociology, philosophy, psychology, literature, business/ economics, politics etc.,” says Balakrishna. This practice will help you for the Reading Comprehension portion of the Verbal Ability section.
You need to also prepare on your vocabulary. “Learn around 10 to 15 new words/ idioms/ phrases each day and revise these till they know the meaning and understand the context in which these words are used,” Balakrishna mentions.
Data Interpretation & Logical Reasoning
For the Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning section also, practice is the key. Balakrishna suggests you to practice Data Interpretation sets and Logical Reasoning questions every day. “Do around three to four Data Interpretation sets daily and about eight to ten Logical Reasoning questions,” he says.
Apart from the daily section wise practice, you must also scan though previous years’ CAT exam papers and understand the pattern of the exam. “Look through past CAT papers to understand the nature of questions that could appear in the exam,” Balakrishna mentions.
