Gurgaon-based Management Development Institute (MDI) is planning to expand its presence in the Middle East, by setting up a campus in Doha in Qatar.

This will be MDI’s first international campus. This was revealed by Dr Sujit K Basu, director, MDI, to MBAUniverse.com. “Middle East is a good market for expansion and we are very seriously planning a campus in Doha. We are in talks with the government there, and are likely to finalize the plans very soon.”

But why Doha -- and not Singapore or Dubai? Dr Basu is of view that Dubai and Singapore are crowded with many international players. “With our research we have found that huge number of people at Doha need to be trained. MDI has the credentials and requisite skills. Further, MDI specializes in energy management sector which will have great demand in the oil-economy of there,” he said. Doha large oil and gas companies, including Qatar Petroleaum, Qatar Gas and Ras Gas. Also, Doha is currently experiencing a boom, and the city is developing rapidly. The city is home to the University of Qatar, established in 1973, as well as several other universities located in Doha's Education City.

MDI also has plans to expand within the country. Said Dr Basu, “We are requesting the governments of Rajasthan and Haryana for additional land for expansion.”

Over the next five years, students’ intake at MDI will increase with the institute planning to double the intake for its flagship Post Graduate Program in Management, he added, and “we need to accommodate around 700 students. We can only accommodate half that number in our current location.”

Established in 1973, MDI is ranked amongst the top management institutes in the country and is the only Indian institute to be granted international accreditation by AMBA.
