On August 17, 2010 IIM Indore had announced the launch of IIM Raipur, the newest B-school that is all set to join the elite IIM club. IIM Raipur will be the 10th IIM. Amongst the other IIMs which went functional in 2010, IIM Raipur is the third to get functional after IIM Ranchi and Rohtak.

IIM Indore, the mentor B-school, has announced that IIM Raipur will admit students from this academic year (2010-12) itself. Creating hope among the students who could not get through the top B-schools this year, IIM Indore has announced that any candidate having a CAT 2009 score is eligible to apply for the admission in IIM Raipur for the session 2010-12.

To know more about the admission process and the plans for the new MBA institute MBAUniverse.com interviewed Dr. N Ravichandran, Director, IIM Indore.

Following are the excerpts of the interview with Dr. Ravichandran:

Q: What are the eligibility criteria for applying to IIM Raipur?

A:For IIM Raipur, any student who has taken CAT 2009 is eligible to apply. The minimum percentile which a student of general category should have is 90. He/she must be able to produce all the required documents such as CAT 2009 test registration number. Once selected by IIM Raipur, the candidate has to submit all the original certificates at the time of joining the program. If they are not able to produce them, they can be asked to withdraw from the program. There is no age limit for the students to apply.

Q: What are the important dates as far as admission in IIM Raipur is concerned?

A:The personal interviews will be held at Bangalore, Delhi, Hyderabad, Kolkata and Mumbai during September 10 to 12. In Indore, the interviews will be held from September 10 to 14. The session is scheduled to start around October 10, 2010 and is planned to complete (first year) by end of April 2011. We plan to start the second year of the program from around June 20, 2011 after a six weeks summer internship.

Q: Where will be the classes held for IIM Raipur? What about the faculty?

A:IIM Raipur has been allotted land by Government of Chhattisgarh. Initially IIM Raipur would operate from the premises of Government Engineering College, Sejbahar, Raipur.

As far as faculty is concerned, advertisement for the faculty positions for IIM Raipur has already been released on August 24, 2010. The faculty to teach in the first batch of IIM Raipur would be outsourced from IIM Indore and other locations or institutions.

Q: How is the curriculum for IIM Raipur designed?

A:The overall program consists of six terms covered over two years. The first year of the program consists of three terms covering basic or the foundation courses of different business functions. Second year consists of elective courses.

As a general rule, a four-credit course requires a commitment of about 100 hours from the student of which about 25 hours are to be spent in the classroom, which is usually 20 sessions of 75 minutes each and the balance to be utilized for preparation and assignments. The courses carry two, three or four-credits.

Upcoming IIMs

The other IIMs in the pipeline are IIM Udaipur and IIM Trichy. IIM Udaipur is expected to be functional from 2011.
