IIM Ahmedabad:

Delivering the convocation address at IIM-Ahmedabad, Mr L N Mittal, Chairman and CEO, Arcelor Mittal asked the bright graduates to dream big and realize the same by consistent efforts.

“You have all built an excellent foundation here at IIM Ahmedabad and you may well have some very big ambitions. But don’t expect to realize those ambitions overnight. Start with small steps. Set yourself ambitious but realistic targets that will stretch you but that you can achieve within a reasonable time frame. You may want to create a mansion. But recognize that if you want it to be sustainable, there is no pre-fab option available to you. You need to build brick by brick and over time it will take shape,” he said.

He cautioned the IIMA- graduates that they should not be complacent as only the MBA degree from this prestigious institute is not a guarantee of success and they need to do a lot more to gain the winning edge. “Be under no illusion: Life is tough and being successful in life is even tougher. Success is not going to be handed to you on a plate, just because you have a degree from a top university,” he said.

Giving the lesson of life, he said, “It is often the difficult times and how one handles them, which are the most defining in terms of life’s achievements and the development of one’s own strengths and character.”

Giving his own example and encouraging entrepreneurial energy among the budding managers, he said, “The real transformational change comes from entrepreneurship. The world needs people who have the desire and motivation to buck the trend, think differently and potentially carve out a path which has not been followed before.”

I hope for you – the courage to do the right thing. May you make the right choice.”

He also spoke on empowering value of education and the increasing power of information and technology was increasingly becoming important for success in different businesses. As a parting thought, he urged the students, as future business leaders, to apply independent thought and answer some simple questions. “Is it possible to carry business the way it is”, “If not, what is your role in shaping tomorrow’s picture?”, “Do you have the conviction to find sustainable way of doing business”, “Do you have resilience to steer the course of the future.”
