This way you could reduce the burden of the MBA entrance exam cost.
12. How to decide which MBA Entrance Exam to take?
A difficult part while applying for MBA entrance exam is taking the decision which exams to choose and why to choose. It may be noted, if you decide to appear in all the MBA entrance exams, you may make a big hole in your pocket with more than Rs.20,000 spent only on MBA entrance exam fees. As such the suggestion is to think well on following parameters and then decide which are the most suitable MBA entrance exams that you should apply and appear in:
12.1: Shortlist Preferred MBA Colleges
You should select 8-10 most preferred MBA colleges in which you wish to take admission on following parameters:
- MBA College Fee: If the Fee is very high and you are not able to afford it, think again
- Placements: A consistent Record of High placements with rising average salary is a good sign
- Ranking & Accreditation: Trust only the best
- Faculty: The most important criteria, Choose wisely
- MBA Programs: Whether it offers General MBA or Specialized MBA, Make a Choice
- Legacy & Alumni: Larger the Network, better opportunities you will get
- Location: Either prefer Top Cities for MBA, or Top Colleges

12.2 MBA Entrance Exam Difficulty Level
MBA entrance exams have varying difficulty level. You need to assess your capability and preparation level and the time left to prepare and crack the exam with high score. If you wish to get admission in IIMs or other top MBA colleges, you need to appear in higher difficulty exam like CAT/XAT/IIFT and if you wish to pursue your MBA from other good MBA colleges, you can opt for moderate difficulty MBA entrance exams like NMAT/ SNAP/CMAT. Shared below are the MBA entrance exams with their difficulty level.
Exam Difficulty Level |
MBA Entrance Exams |
Preparation Time Required |
High |
XAT, CAT, IIFT |
6-12 Months |
Moderate |
NMAT, SNAP, TISSNET |
4-6 Months |
Easy |
CMAT, MAT, IBSAT |
2-3 Months |
12.3 How to Test Your Readiness and Choose Exams?
Before making a choice and applying for the MBA entrance exams, make sure of your readiness and the time left for exam preparation as you need sufficient time to prepare and crack the exam to get shortlisted by your preferred B-school
Take 4-5 Mock Tests and Check Your Score: If you wish to apply for high difficulty level exam, make sure that you get good score and sufficient time is left for your further preparation. For example, your CAT/XAT preparation requires more time than the CMAT, MAT preparation
Choose only 2-3 MBA Entrance Exams: After you have decided on preferred B-schools and your exam readiness, it becomes easier to choose the preferred MBA entrance exams. As such narrowing your choice will help you to score better as you will focus more on your exam preparation and can avoid making a hole in your pocket as well. Experts suggest a combination of 3-4 exams which offer you wider choice of MBA colleges as below:
CAT, XAT, IIFT: The difficulty level of these exams is higher than other exams. If you think you can crack these exams, you can choose one, two or all the three depending upon your choice. CAT has a larger acceptability as apart from IIMs, almost all the 500 top MBA colleges in India accept CAT score. However, XLRI does not accept CAT, so if you wish to get into XLRI you must appear in XAT which is unique with its Decision Making section. XAT score is accepted by 150+ B-schools in India. Similarly, IIFT MBA entrance test is a high difficulty level exam as score of GK in IIFT can turn your score favourably or against you
CAT or XAT and NMAT or SNAP: You can make a combination of high difficulty and moderate difficulty exams. You can choose 2 or more than 2 exams.
CAT and CMAT/MAT: Taking CAT and making a choice between CMAT and MAT could be good option. While CAT covers all the B-schools that accept CMAT and MAT, high score in CMAT can also offer good admission chances.
