There are now 22 IIMs in India, and knowing all of them well is the first real step in your CAT exam and MBA admission journey. The IIMs share a brand and are regarded as top MBA colleges in India, the CAT exam and the IIM Act 2017, but each one is autonomous: it sets its own fee, its own number of seats, its own cut-offs and its own selection weightages. That is why they differ far more than you think. For example, fees range from about ₹17.90 lakh at IIM Rohtak to ₹27.50 lakh at IIM Ahmedabad. IIM MBA seats run from just 70 at the newest IIM, Guwahati, to around 559 at IIM Lucknow; and older IIMs like Ahmedabad, Bangalore and Calcutta have different approaches to IIM Admissions. What Is an IIM, and Why the Name Matters
The Indian Institutes of Management are institutions of national importance, each established or recognised by an Act of Parliament and governed under the IIM Act 2017. That statute is what gives the IIMs in India their degree-granting power and, importantly, their autonomy — each institute sets its own admission policy, its own fee and its own selection weightings.
This autonomy explains almost everything an aspirant finds confusing about the IIMs in India. There is no common application, no common fee and no single cut-off. What looks like one system is twenty-two IIM colleges in India that share a brand, a governing statute and an entrance exam, and differ on nearly everything else.

Only IIM Nagpur and IIM Udaipur state seat intake in their own official admission policies — 340 with a full category-wise breakdown, and 375 planned respectively.

How Many IIMs Are There in India, and How the Count Grew
There are 22 IIMs in India as of 2026. The old 21 IIM list was added with IIM Guwahati in 2025. The number of IIMs in India has moved twice in recent years, which is why older articles still say twenty or twenty-one.
IIM Mumbai joined in 2023, when the National Institute of Industrial Engineering, NITIE, was converted to IIM status. Its fee history reflects the transition sharply, rising from ₹14.63 lakh for the 2023-25 batch to ₹21.00 lakh for 2024-26.
IIM Guwahati became the 22 IIM in India. On 18 August 2025 the Union Education Minister tabled the Indian Institutes of Management (Amendment) Bill, 2025 in the Lok Sabha to establish it as an Institute of National Importance, with a corpus of ₹555 crore over five years. The institute was inaugurated on 14 February 2026 and is mentored by IIM Ahmedabad. It is the second IIM in the North-East after IIM Shillong.

Two points before you use this table. Mess charges sit outside the fee at almost all the IIMs in India, typically ₹20,000 to ₹30,000 a term, and every institute charges a refundable caution deposit on top. And IIM Lucknow and IIM Indore have held fees flat across three consecutive batches, which is unusual restraint in this market. IIM admission is the dream of almost every CAT exam aspirant. To get into an IIM, you have to clear four steps: complete your CAT 2026 registration, prepare for and take the CAT exam, meet each IIM’s shortlisting criteria, and finally appear for the WAT and personal interview round. IIM Guwahati: India’s 22nd IIM
The newest of the IIMs in India deserves its own section, because almost nothing published about it elsewhere is current.
IIM Guwahati was inaugurated on 14 February 2026 at Tech City, Bongora, Guwahati, Assam. It is mentored by IIM Ahmedabad and is admitting its first two-year MBA batch for 2026-28, with a seat intake of 70.
Its admission process is the most distinctive among all the IIMs in India. There is no interview stage. Selection runs Stage 0 basic academic eligibility, Stage 1 CAT eligibility, and Stage 2 final selection on a composite score of 0.65 × normalised CAT plus 0.35 × normalised application rating, where the rating is built from banded scores for Class 10, Class 12, graduation and work experience out of 35.
Its CAT cut-offs are 85 overall and 75 sectional for General and EWS, 80 and 70 for NC-OBC, 75 and 65 for SC, and 65 and 55 for ST. Its fee of ₹18 lakh covers tuition, accommodation and a mess advance adjusted against actuals, with a ₹15,000 refundable caution deposit — the most inclusive package at the lowest price among institutes with a genuine 2026-28 fee document.
Selected candidates must be 19 years of age as on 30 June 2026.
How to Choose the Right IIM for You
Rank order is the worst possible basis for a shortlist of IIMs in India, because it answers a question you did not ask. Four better questions:
Which institutes weight what I am strong at? If your CAT score is your asset, IIM Ahmedabad, IIM Shillong and IIM Guwahati all put 65% on it. If your asset is three years of documented work experience, IIM Sambalpur and IIM Sirmaur put 20 marks out of 100 on it. If it is your Class 12 record, IIM Indore puts 25.
What is the fee against the outcome I can realistically expect? Not the highest package — the median. IIM Lucknow at ₹20.75 lakh against a ₹33.20 lakh average and a ₹0.30 lakh average-to-median gap is the strongest such case among the older IIMs in India. IIM Rohtak at ₹17.90 lakh against ₹20.03 lakh is the strongest among the newer ones.
Do I interview well? At IIM Calcutta the interview is 48 of 100. At IIM Guwahati there is none. That single fact should reorder some shortlists.
What does the institute actually disclose? Some publish audited reports; others publish top-slice figures only. IIM Amritsar publishes no whole-batch average at all. Disclosure is itself information.
