IIM Bangalore Admission Highlights

IIM Bangalore Eligibility Criteria

The IIM Bangalore admission eligibility criteria are straightforward on paper and carry one requirement that trips candidates up.

Degree. A bachelor’s degree in any discipline with a minimum of 50% marks or equivalent CGPA. Applicants from SC, ST and PwD categories need 45%.

Professional route. A completed professional degree — CA, CS, ICWA (CMA) or FIAI — is accepted in place of a bachelor’s degree. Candidates who completed CA, ICWA or CS after Class 12 without a bachelor’s degree are eligible to apply, subject to the same minimum percentage.

CAT. A CAT score valid on the date of application submission.

Reference letters. Two online reference letters are mandatory. Candidates supply the email and contact details of two referees in the online application. References should preferably come from a current or past employer, or from a teacher at an institution where the candidate studied. The referees must submit directly, online, on or before the last date. The application can only be submitted once the Reference section is complete, no separate extension is allowed, and references cannot be received or submitted separately.

Documents required as part of the IIM Bangalore admission application: Class 10, Class 12 and bachelor’s degree transcripts; the degree or provisional degree certificate; a bonafide certificate for final-year candidates; professional degree transcripts and certificate where applicable; a statement of purpose; work experience letters with first and last payslips; SC, ST, NC-OBC or EWS certificate where applicable; and the relevant disability certificate with UDID card for PwD candidates.

CAT Cut Off Accepted by IIM Bangalore

The IIM Bangalore cut off for the 2026-28 batch, based on CAT 2025 percentiles, applies to the first shortlist.

Two conditions sit alongside the table. Only candidates obtaining a minimum raw score that is positive in all sections of CAT 2025 will be considered — a negative or blank section ends the application regardless of percentile. And the institute states plainly that these are the cut-offs used for preparing the first shortlist, and that the scores of those called for interview were higher.

At 85 aggregate, the IIM Bangalore cut off is among the lower published figures across the IIMs in India, alongside IIM Calcutta, IIM Mumbai and IIM Kozhikode. That reflects how the institute manages application volume rather than how competitive it is. IIM Bangalore ranks 2 on NIRF 2025 and 2 on MBAUniverse.com Rankings 2026, and all subsequent processing, standardisation and selection are limited to candidates in that first shortlist.

IIM Bangalore Stage-1 Shortlisting Criteria and Weightage

Candidates who clear the IIM Bangalore admission cut off receive a pre-PI score built from six components.

The CAT component splits by section in a way most candidates get wrong. The 55 points are derived as VARC 19, DILR 21 and QA 15. Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning carries the single largest sectional weight in IIM Bangalore admission — more than Quantitative Ability by six full points.

Gender diversity applies only at the pre-PI stage and is not carried into the next round.

Scores for Class 10, Class 12 and the bachelor’s degree are normalised, and each component is standardised using the formula:

Standardised score = Max [0, min {wt, wt/2 + ((val − mean) ÷ sd) × wt ÷ 6}]

where wt is the component weight, val the raw score, and mean and sd the pool mean and standard deviation.

Incomplete or intermediate graduation scores are considered only where the final score is pending. Where a candidate has no Class 10, Class 12 or bachelor’s score because of COVID, no weightage is given for that component and the weights on the others are re-adjusted.

The Work Experience Formula and Its Ceiling

Work experience in IIM Bangalore admission rises linearly and then flattens, which differs from most IIMs where it peaks and falls away.

Pre-PI work experience score = 10x ÷ 36 if 0 < x < 36 = 10 if x ≥ 36

where x is months of work experience up to July 2025.

A candidate with 18 months scores 5; one with 36 months scores the full 10; one with 60 months also scores 10. IIM Bangalore does not penalise longer experience, unlike IIM Tiruchirappalli, IIM Ranchi and IIM Jammu, where the score falls to zero at 48 months or more.

What does not count: any time spent as an intern during or after a programme of study, any period of apprenticeship such as the articleship required by certain professional courses, and any unpaid work in any organisation or institution.

Candidates with CA, Cost Accounting or CS certifications are eligible for weightage under the professional course category, with scores from the final year normalised. Where a candidate has both a professional course and work experience, the maximum of the two scores is taken, not the sum.

The Automatic Qualification Route

A provision unique to IIM Bangalore admission among the older IIMs. For candidates in the first shortlist, the top ten candidates in each of the following categories automatically qualify for the PI stage:

• Total score in CAT

• Adjusted bachelor’s degree score, calculated separately for commerce, arts and science disciplines

• Professional score for CA, ICWA or CS

That is potentially fifty automatic IIM Bangalore admission calls — ten on CAT, ten each across three bachelor’s streams, and ten on professional qualifications. Post-interview, all such candidates are evaluated in exactly the same way as everyone else, so the route secures a call, not a seat.

IIM Bangalore Selection Process: WAT and PI

The second stage of IIM Bangalore admission is a Personal Interview together with a Written Ability Test.

The PI and the WAT happen on the same day and in the same location. The WAT runs approximately 30 minutes and asks candidates to write a note, which is evaluated on both the content and the style of the writing.

There is no Group Discussion round.

IIM Bangalore Final Composite Score

The post-PI weightings for IIM Bangalore admission are published in full, and the shift from the first stage is substantial.

CAT falls from 55 to 25 between the two stages. The 25 post-PI points split as VARC 8.75, DILR 10 and QA 6.25 — the same proportions as the pre-PI split, scaled down, with DILR again carrying the most.

Final IIM Bangalore admission offers to candidates in each category are made strictly on the basis of the post-PI scores.

The Work Experience Quality Multiplier

This is the mechanism that distinguishes IIM Bangalore admission from every other IIM, and it is worth understanding before an interview.

The work experience weight assigned in the pre-PI score is scaled down from 10 to 5 for the post-PI calculation. That halved score is then multiplied by a quality-of-experience score, which each member of the interview panel awards on a five-point scale: 0.25, 0.5, 1, 1.5 or 2. The average quality score across the panel is multiplied by the pre-PI work experience score to produce a revised weighted work experience score.

The consequence for IIM Bangalore admission is that two candidates with identical months of experience can leave the interview with very different scores. A candidate rated 2 by the panel earns four times the work experience score of a candidate rated 0.5. What the panel is assessing is not the length of a career but the substance of it, and that shifts how a candidate should prepare to talk about their role.

Reservation and the Consequences of Misrepresentation

IIM Bangalore admission follows reservation for EWS, NC-OBC, SC, ST and PWD in accordance with the law.

The institute states its position on false claims more sharply than other IIMs. Presentation of employment claims that are false will be dealt with severely. A candidate found to have provided incorrect information about work experience will not be considered further for admission, and will be barred from applying to any programme at IIM Bangalore for the next three years.

How to Apply for IIM Bangalore Admissions 2027

After admissions process is open, candidates can apply for IIM Bangalore Admissions 2027 in following way. 

Step 1. Register for CAT 2026 and select IIM Bangalore during CAT 2026 registration process.
Step 2. Take CAT exam, and check that every section carries a positive raw score before checking percentiles.
Step 3. Submit the online IIM Bangalore application form.
Step 4. Ensure your referees fill details
Step 5. If shortlisted, attend the WAT and PI on the assigned day, with originals of every document listed earlier.
Step 6. Await the post-PI merit list and the offer.

IIM Bangalore Seats

IIM Bangalore MBA and MBA (BA) seats are above 600 for the 2025-27 batch.

IIM Bangalore Fees and Financial Aid

The IIM Bangalore fees for the PGP 2026-28 batch are ₹26,00,000 for two years, with a one-time refundable caution deposit of ₹30,000 payable separately at registration.

What the fee covers: tuition, library, internet, case permission royalty, course material, hostel room rent and service charge, medical insurance, personal accident insurance and alumni activity. That is a broader inclusion list than most IIMs publish.

What is not covered in IIM Bangalore fees: a mess advance of ₹30,000 each term, and any service tax or other tax that becomes applicable by law.

Accommodation on campus is provided for PGP students, though students may opt to live off-campus in the second year by making their own arrangements.

Financial aid. IIM Bangalore operates the most fully documented need-based scheme among the IIMs in India. All PGP students with annual household income below ₹8,00,000 are eligible to apply, as are students facing severe financial difficulty from sudden unforeseen circumstances.

The Financial Aid Committee runs a two-stage process. First, students receive a financial status score based on four criteria — annual gross household income including the student’s own pre-IIMB income and outstanding loans not taken for conspicuous consumption, household savings, real estate assets, and other assets. Some students are then called for a personal interaction with a faculty panel, which evaluates financial need and verifies the application, assigning a financial need score. On the weighted average of the two scores, applicants receive 100%, 80%, 60%, 40% or 20% financial aid.

IIM Bangalore Placements at a Glance

For the PGP and PGPBA batch of 2024-26, IIM Bangalore reported 665 offers to 605 students from 177 companies, with a median salary of ₹34.75 lakh and an average of ₹35.35 lakh. The institute does not disclose a highest package.
