IIM Ahmedabad admission runs on a two-stage structure that the institute documents very clearly. Understanding both stages of IIM Ahmedabad admission, and the screening that happens before either, is the difference between a realistic application and a hopeful one.

IIM Ahmedabad Eligibility Criteria

The IIM Ahmedabad eligibility criteria that govern IIM Ahmedabad admission operate as a series of gates. Clearing each one only qualifies you to be ranked; it does not earn you a call.

Degree requirement. A bachelor’s degree with at least 50% marks or equivalent CGPA, relaxed to 45% for SC, ST and PwD candidates, from a recognised university.

CAT performance. Percentile minimums by category, set out in the next section.

School record. This is where IIM Ahmedabad admission differs most sharply from other top IIMs. The institute computes P, the average of the percentages scored in the Class 10 and Class 12 examinations, and applies a minimum that varies by the stream studied in Class 12.

A General-category Science student averaging 79 across Class 10 and Class 12 is screened out of IIM Ahmedabad admission regardless of CAT percentile. There is no compensating for it elsewhere in the process.

Bachelor’s degree. For IIM Ahmedabad admission the bachelor’s minimum is set at the 80th percentile of the marks of the applicant pool within each Academic Category, so it moves each year with the strength of the cohort rather than sitting at a fixed number.

IIM Ahmedabad CAT Cut Off

The IIM Ahmedabad CAT cut off for the PGP 2026-28 batch, based on CAT 2025 percentile ranks, is published in full including a separate PwD column.

Sectional percentiles apply to all three CAT sections — Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension, Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning, and Quantitative Ability. The overall figure is the percentile on the total scaled score.

Transgender candidates in the General category are assessed against NC-OBC cut-offs, which is stated explicitly in the institute’s criteria document.

At 95 overall with 85 in every section, the IIM Ahmedabad cut off is the second highest published among the IIMs in India, behind IIM Rohtak’s 97. But the two are not comparable in effect. IIM Rohtak publishes no sectional requirement at all, while IIM Ahmedabad’s demand for 85 in each of three sections is a materially harder test of balance. A candidate scoring 97 overall on the strength of one exceptional section will clear IIM Rohtak and fail IIM Ahmedabad admission at the first gate.

IIM Ahmedabad Stage-1 Shortlisting Criteria and Weightage

Candidates who clear the IIM Ahmedabad admission screening are ranked on a Composite Score, which IIM Ahmedabad publishes as a formula rather than a weights table.

CS = 0.35 × (Normalised Application Rating score) + 0.65 × (Normalised overall CAT 2025 score)

which resolves to CS = (AR × 0.35 ÷ 38) + (Overall CAT score × 0.65 ÷ 204)

Two details in that formula repay attention. The divisor 38 is the average Application Rating of the top 50 candidates in the applicant pool, so your profile is scored against the strongest profiles that applied rather than against a fixed scale. The divisor 204 normalises the CAT score.

The IIM Ahmedabad admission split is 65% CAT and 35% profile. That is the same ratio IIM Shillong and IIM Guwahati arrive at independently, and it means roughly a third of your IIM Ahmedabad admission position is fixed before you enter the examination hall.

Shortlisting then runs in two stages. Stage 1 selects exceptional performers within each Academic Category. Stage 2 draws a category-wise merit list from everyone remaining.

How Many Candidates IIM Ahmedabad Shortlists

This is the part of IIM Ahmedabad admission that no other IIM page in India can carry, because no other institute publishes the numbers.

IIM Ahmedabad admission records also publish the minimum Composite Score at which each category was called in the Stage 2 round, to six decimal places.

The Academic Category System Explained

Much of IIM Ahmedabad admission turns on which Academic Category, or AC, you fall into — and the volumes differ enormously between them.

AC-3 and AC-4 together carried more than 144,000 General-category applicants and produced 245 Stage 1 selections between them. AC-1 Part I, with 212 applicants, produced 12. The same Composite Score means a very different thing depending on the category you sit in, which is why the bachelor’s thresholds in the eligibility section vary from 62.50 to 84.90.

Candidates in the ACRC group are assessed on criteria C1 to C3; those in the non-ACRC group on C4 to C6. The non-ACRC route sets absolute CAT requirements — PT at or above 95, and PQA, PDILR and PVARC each at or above 85 — rather than the category-relative thresholds used elsewhere.

IIM Ahmedabad Selection Process: AWT and PI

The final stage of IIM Ahmedabad admission is an Analytical Writing Test followed by a Personal Interview. IIM Ahmedabad does not run a Group Discussion round for this batch.

The AWT-PI stage is where 1,308 candidates compete for 414 seats. What the institute does not publish is how the two components are weighted against CAT and profile in the final merit list.

[DATA GAP: IIM Ahmedabad final selection weights after AWT-PI — the shortlisting criteria document covers screening and the call only, and refers to a separate Admissions Procedure for PGP 2026-28 that is not in the collection. Confirm before publish]

This is a genuine gap and worth stating plainly rather than filling with an assumption. For context on how peer institutes weight the same stage, IIM Calcutta gives the interview 48 marks out of 100, IIM Bangalore and IIM Lucknow 40 each, and IIM Kozhikode splits its final score 35% CAT, 35% PI, 20% WAT and 10% resume.

IIM Ahmedabad Admission 2027: Important Dates

Candidates should first complete CAT 2026 registration and take CAT 2026 exam on November 29, 2026. Once result in published, IIM Ahmedabad will publish shortlisting criteria and calls in January.

For reference, the shortlisting criteria for the PGP 2026-28 batch were published on 9 January 2026, following the CAT 2025 result.

How to Apply to IIM Ahmedabad Admissions 2027

Step 1. Register for CAT 2026 and name IIM Ahmedabad among your chosen institutes. The CAT application is also where your Class 10, Class 12 and graduation marks enter the system, and those feed the Application Rating directly.

Step 2. Sit CAT and check your sectional percentiles against the 85 threshold, not just your overall.

Step 3. Complete the IIM Ahmedabad application when invited after the result.

Step 4. If shortlisted, attend the AWT and PI with originals of every mark sheet and certificate.

Step 5. Accept the offer and pay within the stated window.

Accuracy in Step 1 matters more in IIM Ahmedabad admission than elsewhere, because the Application Rating is built from data you enter in the CAT form and is then normalised against the top 50 profiles in the pool.

IIM Ahmedabad Programmes, Seats and Reservation

PGP-FABM

Post Graduate Programme in Food and Agri-business Management, 90 seats, total fee ₹24.29 lakh (secondary source)

PGPX

Reservation follows Government of India policy for Central Educational Institutions: NC-OBC 27%, SC 15%, ST 7.5%, EWS 10%, and PwD 5% as a horizontal reservation. The category-wise screening and call figures earlier in this guide show that policy operating in practice — the proportion called rises from 9.2% in General to 60.2% in PwD, because the reserved pools are smaller and a larger share must be called to fill the seats.

IIM Ahmedabad Fees and Scholarships

The IIM Ahmedabad fees for the PGP 2025-27 batch are ₹27,50,000, of which tuition is ₹20,10,000.

The programme fee does not cover personal expenses on boarding, laptop computer, travel, clothes, stationery or laundry. All students are required to have a personal computer, which the Institute can arrange to buy locally.

IIM Ahmedabad fees have moved from ₹25.00 lakh for 2023-25 to ₹26.50 lakh for 2024-26 to ₹27.50 lakh for 2025-27 — a rise of 10% across two cycles. That makes it the highest published official fee among all the IIMs in India.

Refunds carry a deduction of ₹1,000 as a processing fee under Ministry of Education Notification No. 14-4/2007-U.3(A), with the balance released to the account it came from.

The average of your Class 10 and Class 12 percentages must clear a threshold set by your Class 12 stream. For General and EWS candidates that is 80 for Science, 77 for Commerce and 75 for Arts and Humanities. NC-OBC candidates need 75, 72 and 70 respectively, SC candidates 70, 67 and 64, and ST candidates 65, 62 and 59.
Shortlisted candidates attend an Analytical Writing Test followed by a Personal Interview. There is no Group Discussion round. The weights applied to AWT and PI in the final merit list are not published in the institute’s shortlisting criteria document.
Yes. IIM Ahmedabad states in its criteria document that transgender candidates in the General category are assessed against NC-OBC cut-offs, which is 90 overall and 80 sectional rather than 95 and 85.
CS = 0.35 × Normalised Application Rating + 0.65 × Normalised overall CAT score, which resolves to (AR × 0.35 ÷ 38) + (CAT score × 0.65 ÷ 204). The divisor 38 is the average Application Rating of the top 50 candidates in the pool, so profiles are scored relative to the strongest applicants that year.
