Placement 2013: Slow economy bugs top B-schools' average packages

Amidst continuing economic slowdown worldwide and low industry sentiments, the average salary offered at Top B schools show a mixed signal indicating that the post-MBA job scenario may take more time to get better.

Amidst continuing economic slowdown worldwide and low industry sentiments, the average salary offered at Top B schools show a mixed signal indicating that the post-MBA job scenario may take more time to get better.  

With placement 2013 season coming towards end, the placement reports released by most of the top B-schools indicate to a sluggish growth in the average salary offered to their passing-out graduates. Some B-schools have even witnessed a decline in the average salary offered at their campus as compared to the placement season 2012.

Our previous article on placement reported the placement status at different top B-schools. Many of the IIMs like IIM Lucknow, IIM Indore and new IIMs like IIM Rohtak, IIM Ranchi, IIM Kashipur & IIM Udaipur are still to release their placement report.

Though, some of the top B-school have formally released their placement report, the crisis is apparent in the average salary offered to their batch. In most of the cases, average salary of 2013 at top B-schools has either increased by just 5-7 per cent or witnessed a decline.

While institutes like IIM A, IIM B, IIM C & ISB chose not to publish their average salary data, the other top B-schools which shared their placement report with MBAUniverse.com is listed below:

Just a consolation

Most of the B-schools took consolation in reporting 100 per cent placement for their passing- out batch, but the average salary offered to their students this year emerged as an area of concern for most of them.
While SPJIMR reported an average salary of Rs 16.13 lakh, which is higher than Rs. 15.46 lakh of last year, students at IIFT received an average salary of Rs. 12.40 lakh as compared to Rs.12.1 lakh last year. JBIMS average salary increased merely from Rs 14.9 lakh in 2012 to Rs 15.3 lakh this year. Students at XIMB had received Rs.11.42 lakh as average salary last year while this year it has increased just by 0.40 lakh to Rs.11.81 lakh. 

School of Business Management at NMIMS, however, performed better with the average salary growing by 10 per cent from Rs 13.04 lakh last year to Rs 14.40 lakh this placement year.

TAPMI also registered an increase in average salary of its students this year with Rs. 8.65 lakh in comparison to Rs.8.01 lakh last year. Average annual package at MICA increased by 8% in 2013 placements and stood at Rs. 9.2 lakh in comparison to Rs. 8.5 lakh last year.

The tough reality:

Many top B-schools, however, had to face the tough reality that the average salary to their students has slightly come down. 

While average salary at FMS Delhi dropped from Rs 16.34 lakh in 2012 to Rs 16 lakh this year, the median Salary at XLRI this year stood at Rs 16.20 lakh, a little less than the last year’s Rs 16.28 lakh.

IIM Raipur also witnessed a decline in the average salary offered to its class of 2013 with the students getting an annual package of Rs 12.03 lakh as compared to Rs 12.94 lakh last year. 

Similarly, Department of Management Studies, IIT Delhi also reported an average salary of Rs 12.60 to its passing out batch, Rs 0.48 lakh less than Rs 13.08 lakh offered to the last years’ batch.
