WAT /Essay Topics: 10 Probable Essay Topics with tips for IIM WAT process

Irrelevant use of vocabulary- Vocabulary which is not required must not be used. It might unnecessarily stretch your message, may have wrong impression on the reader who incidentally is your examiner. This, instead of elevating your ranking may affect otherwise.

Avoid Repetition of ideas and sentences- How would you react If someone goes on saying or repeating the same idea in different sentences or in similar ones? A feeling of boredom and lack of interest would occur. So avoid it, since it conveys the message that you know very less on the given/chosen topic.

Contradictory statements or ideas- Your statements should not nullify or crisscross your earlier made statements. Despite all the knowledge you have put in the writing this factor will make you lose on final section round.

Poor hand writing with cutting and cancellations- You may be skilled in writing, you have good vocabulary and know how to use figurative, idiomatic language with quotations BUT if the handwriting is poor, your reader may not follow the message which you wish to convey in its true sense.  Find out how many cuttings and cancellations are there in one paragraph.  Next time when you write – minimize them. Gradually you will be equipped with fine writing skills with fewer mistakes or no mistakes.

Manage the time-There will be a time limit of say 15 to 20 minutes for written ability test. If you have practiced a lot on various topics, you will be able to write a well worded essay of 200-300 words with less efforts in the limited time else the writing piece may  have wayward thoughts and ideas, difficult to understand.  The key advice is to read your written piece twice, understand the errors and write again. This will enable you to write well within the time.

Personal Interview
PI (personal interview) is the most important part of final admission round.  The weightage is even more than the written examination.

What is the most appropriate dress code for interview?
What should you wear in your PI round is a something to be addressed to, with clarity in mind. Your dress code should be in accordance to your personality apart from the climate of the place. It should enhance your smartness and should be comfortable to wear. Any dress which makes you uneasy will distract your attention. An interview in Delhi in the month of February or March may need warm clothes. However, if you are a male with fairly good height and slim structure, you may wear plain shirt with tie, dark trousers and preferably a coat as well.  If you are stout, short height, you may wear a vertical striped shirt of light and pleasant color with a tie, dark trousers and a coat. Do not wear tight dress.  A female candidate may wear the same type of dress, or salwar suit, saree depending upon the place and climatic conditions. Avoid wearing jeans.

No unwanted guesses
Personal Interview round may last from 10 to 20 minutes depending on your way of presentation. If you think that you may make wild guesses or simply answer like-Oh well,  I suppose…..;  I want to say….; I think…..;  although the fact is that you know nothing about the subject, you are wasting the time of panelists as well as of yours.

Be keen to attend the questions
Answers to simple questions like ‘tell about yourself’; ‘tell about your family’; ‘tell about your city’ give an opportunity to the aspirant to establish himself before the penetrating questions which would arise out of the answers he is making.  Broad and generic type questions are asked to know about attitude.
