IMT Ghaziabad creates business opportunity for tribal women in Jharkhand; unique initiative

IMT Ghaziabad has taken innovative initiative which helps the Jharkhand Tribal women to earn their monthly livelihood as well as promote the ethnic art

Marching on with a mission to contribute in making the society a better place to live for all, Institute of Management Technology (IMT), Ghaziabad has taken innovative initiative which helps the Jharkhand Tribal women to earn their monthly livelihood as well as promote the ethnic art of Jharkhand.

 

To build the permanent income support for tribal women of Jharkhand and to engage with the community using their knowledge to create future social enterprises, IMT students got associated with the project sell ‘Saura Paintings’ made by tribal women of Jharkhand to generate revenue for them while inspiring others to take to this ethnic art of Jharkhand and earn a living.

 

Creating new business opportunities with this distinctive initiative, IMT has been able to provide monthly income to these women since April 2014. Additionally, the initiative has opened new markets for art and craftwork by promoting the ethnic art of the state and has helped in improving the quality of paintings.  The tribal art of Jharkhand is being promoted aggressively in the Delhi-NCR region. Earlier, Consumers could access to these paintings only in State Emporiums and Dilli Haat as they were not available elsewhere.

 

Highlighting the win-win situation for all stakeholders, Dr. Ranjana Agarwal, project coordinator and faculty at IMT Ghaziabad says,“By connecting with the tribal community for social and economical empowerment, IMT encourages students to use their knowledge gained during management and entrepreneurship study to create a Social Enterprise. With this initiative, we offer monthly livelihood to tribal women in Jharkhand. Apart from contributing to social causes, students get entrepreneurial exposure with a practical experience of selling paintings and engaging with consumers. The packaging of the paintings is being done using bags made from handmade paper by Tihar Jail inmates. With a line up of social activities, IMT is utilizing the skills of people to provide them a work opportunity and a better life.”

 

About Saura

 

Saura is a tribal group in Eastern India, mainly found in western Odisha. The style of ‘Saura Painting’ is associated with Saura tribals. Saura paintings are similar to Warli painting of Maharashtra. The stick like figures for hut, people and plants are used in this style of painting. The artisans who create these paintings are part of a self help group, ‘Singi Dai Mahila Mandal’ located at Jamshedpur, Jharkhand. They got training in making tribal paintings by Tribal Cultural Society, an NGO located in Jamshedpur.

 

The innovative work is a part of the project, ‘Sustainable livelihood options for together to create sustainable livelihood options by finding markets to sell tribal paintings, Tribal Groups in Jharkhand’ of IMT Ghaziabad. This initiative was a project under CRICKET (Centre for Rural Innovation & Capacity Building through Knowledge Management, Entrepreneurship and Technology). Under this plan, faculty members take up various research projects regarding innovation and rural development till date.
