IIM Tiruchirappalli: CAT 2016 gets 50% weight in Admission Criteria; 1st stage shortlist based on CAT scores only

CAT 2016 scores will get a weightage of only 50% in the PGP 2017-19 admission at IIM Tiruchirappalli. Announcing its 1st stage shortlisting and final selection criteria for admission to PGP 2017-19 batch, IIM Trichy has also declared that it plans to have a batch size of 180 students for the PGP batch of 2017-19. Last year the PGP batch size was 120 students.

Focusing on increasing academic diversity in its class rooms, IIM Tiruchirappalli has amended its admission policy as other top IIMs like IIM Ahmedabad, Bangalore and Calcutta have done. IIM Trichy proposes award of diversified weightage in final selection process to flagship PGP 2017-19 batch with Non-engineers getting more points.

The admission process of IIM Trichy will take into consideration the candidate’s performance in CAT 2016, performance in Personal Interview (PI) and Written Analysis Test (WAT), academic record and relevant work experience. The criteria that would be used at the first stage of shortlisting at IIM Trichy to select candidates for Personal Interview and Written Analysis Test (PI & WAT) would be as under -

Shortlisting Criteria for PI & WAT
IIM Trichy will use CAT 2016 percentile for short-listing candidates for PI & WAT. The minimum performance expected from candidates to be shortlisted for the PI & WAT is detailed below.

PI & WAT venues
The Personal Interview and Written Analysis Test would be conducted at New Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai and Kolkata. The exact date for PI & WAT will be communicated to the short-listed candidates by IIM Rohtak which is co-ordinating the Common Admission Process (CAP) for 2017-19 batch on behalf of IIM Raipur, IIM Ranchi, IIM Tiruchirappalli, IIM  Udaipur, IIM Kashipur, IIM Amritsar, IIM Bodhgaya & IIM Sambalpur also referred to as “9 IIMs”.

In cases where candidates have been shortlisted by the 9 IIMs as well as older IIMs, IIM Rohtak would obtain the PI & WAT scores of such candidates directly from the older IIMs. Such candidates will be informed in advance by IIM Rohtak, and they need not appear for the common PI & WAT of the “9 IIMs.”

Final selection post PI round
IIM Trichy proposes to use following parameters and corresponding weightages to arrive at the composite score of the candidates, which will be used to prepare the final merit list for admissions. 
CAT 2016 score: 50% weightage

Written Analysis Test (WAT): 15% weightage. The candidate is expected to have good      Vocabulary, content of writing and writing skills

Personal Interview (PI): 15% weightage: The candidate will be assessed for

  • Communication, attitude and personality 
  • Academic efforts and disposition 
  •  Managerial and leadership attributes 
  •  Social awareness and disposition 
  •  Overall presence 

Work experience (based on quantum of work experience): 5% weightage.

Performance at Undergraduate level: 10% weightage. 
This performance shall be measured by multiplying the percentage marks scored by the weightage applicable to the discipline. 10 per cent of the score so obtained shall be considered in the overall evaluation. [UG performance score = (per cent score at UG * discipline weightage)* 0.10] 
Master’s degree or Professional Qualification: 2% weightage. The requirement will be the pass in the Master Degree/final examinations of CA / ICWA/ CS) 
Gender Diversity: 3% weightage for female candidates

Higher weightage to Non-Engineers
Not only low weight will be awarded to CAT 2016 score, differential weightages shall be applied to different disciplines to account for the degree of difficulty in scoring in different disciplines. According to IIM Trichy ‘To encourage diversity in the batch, differential weightage shall be applied to different disciplines’

IIM Trichy has announced to award maximum points to Arts & Commerce. The weightage to be awarded is as follows – 

Engineering / Technology: 0.6; Science: 0.8; Arts / Medicine (including Pharmacy): 0.9; Commerce / Economics / Management: 1.0 Post Personal Interview and Written Analysis Test and based on above parameters and corresponding weightages including the weight awarded to CAT 2016 score, used to arrive at the composite score of the candidates, final merit list for admissions will be prepared for PGP 2017-19.
