15 percent dip in CAT registrations this year

The number of applicants for the Common Admission Test (CAT) 2010 has witnessed a drop of around 15 per cent compared to the CAT 2009 registrations.
The CAT 2010 registrations were closed on 7 October 2010, after an extension of the registration dates. The voucher sale had ended on 4 October 2010. Based on an official communication from CAT 2010 Convener and faculty of IIM Lucknow Prof. Himanshu Rai, MBAUniverse.com has learnt that a total of 2.06 lakh candidates have registered for CAT 2010. This is a 15% dip from the CAT 2009 registration figures of 2.42 lakh.
The CAT 2009 registration figures had similarly witnessed a marginal dip in comparison to CAT 2008. The registered takers of CAT 2008 were 2.46 lakh.
MBAUniverse.com spoke to some of the well known names of the Management education Fraternity to find out the cause of such a decline.

Dr, Devi Singh, Director, IIM Lucknow said that, the decline in the CAT applicants is not very big deal. We have more than 2500 B-schools across the country offering MBAs, the placement scenario has improved but not for everyone, added Dr. Singh.
Dr Arun Mohan Sherry, Director, IMT CDL asserting very positively on the boom of Management Education said that, I dont think that the craze of Management education is losing its charm. This is just a little fall and will not hamper management education in any way.Earlier, Himanshu Rai, CAT 2010 convener commented that The economic slowdown of the past two years has affected placements in the in the non-IIM institutes drastically. This has probably discouraged students from applying. Even some IIMs had to extend their placement days from three to seven to place all students,.
