CAT 2013: Slow & unpredictable start; 38,447 Candidates Appear In 6 Days

The CAT 2013 saw over 38,447 students taking up the test in the first six days across 40 cities of India. CAT 2013 is expected to gear up in the latter half and near the end of the 20 day exam window when the remaining candidates will take their CAT 2013

With around 38,447 candidates taking up the test in the first five days, CAT 2013 has taken a slow but sure start. CAT 2013 Day 1 started with just 4200 students taking the exam in both the sessions, this number is very low in comparison to the total CAT 2013 registrations of 194,000 which accounts to exactly 9700 candidates per day.

Total of 38,447 candidates took CAT exam in the first 6 day window of CAT 2013 exam.  However, CAT 2013 is expected to gear up in the latter half and near the end of the 20 day exam window when the remaining approx. 155,553 candidates will take their CAT 2013 exam.

CAT 2013 has been unpredictable throughout the five days as claimed by the test takers and experts. Around 4200 aspirants across India sat for CAT 2013 on the first day of the exam on October 16, 2013. On the first day, the quant section was tricky and tough while the verbal section was easy.

The second day of CAT 2013 on October 17 witnessed around 4555 students taking their exams and candidates in both the sessions tested successfully. On the day 2 of CAT 2013 the verbal section was difficult while quant was moderate. Logical Reasoning was tricky for many candidates.

The day 3 of CAT 2013 saw around 7557 candidates taking up the test on October 19,2013. For the first session of the day 3, Verbal section was difficult while quant was moderate. Logical Reasoning and DI questions were easy.

The day 4 of the CAT 2013 on October 20, 2013 witnessed 10473 students taking up the test in which the difficulty level of Quant section was on a higher side while Verbal section was fairly easy.

The day 5 of CAT 2013 on October 21, 2013 witnessed 5775 students taking up the test in which quantitative section along with Logical Reasoning was very calculation intensive while Verbal and Data Interpretation were easy.

Day 6 of CAT 2013 on October 24, 2013 witnesses 5887 students taking up the test in both the session. On day 6, Quantitative section was very calculation intensive and time consuming while Verbal Section was moderate in difficulty level.

Aspirants should learn how to answer a few common questions that have regularly been appearing in Verbal Ability like 'tone of the passage' 'main idea of the passage' 'purpose of writing the passage'; How to opt the last sentence of paragraph; picking out the out of context sentence and work on the areas which they are well versed with.  Go to the examination hall with an open mind.'

In a major development on October 12, 2013, Prometric India, the agency which is conducting CAT 2013 exams on behalf of IIMs had announced that it was trying to re-schedule CAT 2013 for those aspirants who were taking it in Vishakhapatnam and Vijayawada test centres due to Telengana related political unrest in Andhra Pradesh. Candidates scheduled to test in Vishakhapatnam and Vijayawada chooses later dates in the same city or reschedules their CAT 2013 exam in other locations like Bangalore, Bhubaneswar, Chennai and Kokalta. Over day to Day 3, for Vishakhapatnam and Vijaywada, there were 500 candidates whose appointments were being rescheduled to a later date in the same venue.

The CAT 2013 registration indicated the changing profile of CAT aspirants. CAT 2013 registration process got over on September 26, 2013 in which around 1, 96,000 vouchers were sold, while the total registrations for CAT 2013 closed at around 1, 94,000. In- depth analysis of CAT 2013 registration data shows significant trends. For instance, female applicants counted to nearly 30% of total registrations while applicants with engineering and technology background continue to dominate CAT registrations with around 70% of total share.

As per the CAT 2013 registration data release by IIMs and Prometric, female aspirant registrations are up from 28 per cent in 2012, and candidates with more than two years of work experience are up from 13 per cent last year. 
The CAT 2013 is being conducted in a 20 day window from October 16 to November 11, 2013 in Prometric centres across 40 cities of India.
