M NOW magazine organized 'Management Avenues' – full day seminar on employability and management education on June 13, 2008 in New Delhi which brought experts from industry and academia together.

Prof J K Mitra, Dean, Faculty of Management Studies, Delhi; Dr C S Venkata Ratnam, Director, IMI, Delhi; Mr Rajiv Khurana, CEO, The Personnel Lab; Mr Chetan Mahajan, Country Manager, Apollo Group; Ms Celine George, Vice President-HR, Technopak Advisors; Mr Murdhidhar S, Co-founder and COO, MeritTrac were some of the eminent speakers who shared their invaluable thoughts to the large number of students and academia present at the conference. The conference was supported by Confederation of Indian Industry (CII). 

Management Avenues is a unique forum for students to learn about educational options, and to meet and interact with reputed educational institutes. The seminar was organized by M NOW and education domain company Eduexcel to create awareness amongst India's aspiring youth about the various new education and career choices in management and job-oriented education and training.  

The first session featured Mr Khurana as a speaker on the topic of 'Gaining Employability & Relevance: What youth should do to plan their education and career?' Mr Khurana, sharing his success mantras with the students, said, "The three facts of success are intelligence, integrity and passion. Aim high, Muster support, Take charge, Execute plans, Be enthusiastic and energetic in actions, Evaluate and motivate yourself periodically, Stay cool and have fun and Take higher and better challenges are the steps to reach the success."  

The second session was focused on Trends in Education and Career in Retail, Financial Services and Media & Entertainment sectors. The session was addressed by Ms George, Mr Mahajan and Prof Ravi Shankar, Dean – Journalism, Futuristix Media Communication Center. 

While sharing the trends in retail sector, Ms George said, "Retail sector is one of the fastest evolving sectors in India. This sector has capacity to growth further at a very high rate. There is a large scope of job in this sector which include workforce for logistics and supply chain, Merchandise planning, Buyers, Mall Management, Project Management and others." 

Mr Mahajan talked about the various job options and programmes available in Indian market for the students who want to make their career in Banking and Financial Services. "While choosing an institution for study in their relevant area, students have to consider some important points like institute's curriculum, programme offerings and faculty. From the beginning, students should look from the industry point of view," he said. 

The third session on management education was led by Director's various B-school's including Faculty of Management Studies -- Delhi, International Management Institute, Greater Noida based Accurate Institute of Management & Technology, Galgotias Business School and Gurgaon based J K Business School. All speakers delivered their thoughts and views on the topic of 'Management Education: How should students maximize learning from MBA education?' Mr Murdhidhar S, Co-founder and COO, MeritTrac also delivered his address on the topic. 

Prof Mitra said, "For better understanding of management education, students should work prior to join an MBA Program. In next 5 to 6 years, work experience would become compulsory for enter into an MBA Program." 

While talking about maximize learning through management education, said Dr Venkata Ratnam, "Students should read more and more books to increase their knowledge. During their management studies, they should take part in other curricular activities." While sharing the problem of management graduates, said Dr Venkata Ratnam, "Students want to learn but they lack in application. They need discipline and ability to work in team. For make them appropriate in corporate sector, they should have humility, simplicity, integrity and willingness to work."
