IIM Calcutta has revised its curriculum for the two-year Post Graduate Programme in Management (PGP) from year 2008.

The revision comes after a detail review of the changing business environment and the expectations from management graduates. MBAUniverse.com spoke to Dr Prashant Mishra, Chairman, Post Graduate Program (PGP) in Management at IIM-C, to understand the changes and the rationale behind the same.

Confirming the development, Dr Mishra said, “This year, for the PGP batch of 2008-10, we have undertaken a significant revamp in our curriculum. There are three significant improvements over the previous curriculum. We are improving the pedagogical tools used in teaching the programme, reducing the work-load on students and introducing new courses.”

“On pedagogy tools, we have decided that we are going to move towards a mix of pedagogical tools rather than relying heavily on one set of tool like classroom lectures. So case method will get more impetus at IIM-C,” said Dr Mishra.

IIM-C curriculum review committee also thought that the old curriculum was very intensive, thus leaving little time for students-driven projects. Said Dr Mishra, “We thought that the students are more loaded with classes that it should be, and it was necessary to give them enough time to prepare for the classes, to engage into more projects and industry collaborative learning. So we are cutting down a bit on number of classes.”

IIM-C is also planning to introducing new courses in like Information and Communication Technology Development, Information Technology for Organization Effectiveness”, added Dr Mishra.

While sharing the current batch profile of IIM-C’s PGP students, Dr Mishra said, “There are in total 304 students in PGP in management at IIM-C, this year. We have majority of people from engineering background. More than one third of the batch has some work experience. Most of the candidates who have work experience come from IT industry. There are 14 students from overseas.”

When asked that the future plans of IIM-C, Dr Mishra said, “Next year, for the PGP batch of year 2009-11, we are planning to expand our batch size to 375 to 400 students. We are looking forward to use more technologies, establishing a communication lab, partnering with industry to offer certain elective courses of high application oriented knowledge in marketing, finance and strategy areas.”
