Mumbai’s National Institute of Industrial Engineering’s (NITIE) batch of Post Graduate Diploma in Industrial Engineering (PGDIE) is organizing another episode of SAMIKSHA: a series of panel discussions aimed at creating learning beyond classrooms.

The theme of the discussion will be “Special Economic Zones: Fuelling India Inc.’s Growth”, and the event will be held on Saturday, 24 February 2007 at NITIE auditorium, between 2 pm and 5 pm.

The speakers who will take part in the discussions will be Mr. C.S. Gokhale, president (corporate development), Reliance Industries; Mr. Madan Sabnavis, chief economist & head (knowledge management), NCDEX; Ms. S. Gayathri, associate director (Tax and Reg. Services), KPMG; Mr. S. Rohira, Manager (Tax & Reg. Services), PriceWaterhouseCoopers; and Mr. P.S. Raman, Deputy Development, Commissioner, SEEPZ, Mumbai.

Panelists will enlighten students about investments in SEZs, planning & development of SEZs, offshoring, Exim policy, the benefits of SEZs to Indian industry, global opportunities and employment generation through SEZs.

Mr. Arun Giri, business reporter, CNBC TV-18, has consented to be the moderator for the discussion.

NITIE shares with MBAUniverse.com that, “While updating the audience with latest trends in industry, it will prepare the budding managers for the challenges of an evolving business environment… it will attune institutes to be more responsive to and focused on the dynamic nature of industry requirements.”

On the importance of SEZs, this is what NITIE says: “Considering the need to enhance foreign investment and promote experts from the country, and realizing that level playing field must be made available to domestic enterprises and manufacturers for them to be competitive globally, the Government of India -- in April 2000 -- announced the introduction of Special Economic Zones in the country… Indian SEZs offer a zone within the territory of India that operates on a global paradigm of business practices, regulatory framework and the freedom to do business and trade without government restrictions.”

The Samiksha series covers all spheres of management like Operations, Marketing, Finance, HRM, Supply Chain and Information Technology.

NITIE, that was set up in 1963 by the Government of India, with the assistance of United Nations Development Project, is today a leading management institute.
