The inaugural session was addressed by Mr. R Gopalakrishnan, ED, Tata Sons & Convention, Chairman; John Karr, Managing Partner, Deloitte; Kewal Handa, President AIMA & MD Pfizer; Dr. Indu Shahani, Sherrif Mumbai; S K Swamy, President Elect, AIMA; Rekha Sethi DG AIMA & S Mohan President BMA.

Said Kewal Handa, "We are planning to make AIMA as the 'Knowledge Body'. We are starting a series of road-shows, starting with Mumbai."

Handa also stressed upon the fact that objective of AIMA is to empower the new managers with knowledge to handle challenges in this globalized world. Quoting an INSEAD professor, he said, post 9/11 the world is divided into three worlds –

  • World full of fear and uncertainty – the US, UK and Europe
  • World full of pride & success – India & China
  • World filled with humiliation and isolation – Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, etc.

R Gopalakrishnan said, "There is a 'McDonalization of Management' due to number of seminars and conferences happening, the number of books and articles coming out; some with significance and some with little significance. It is the young managers and the students to make sure that you participate in these seminars as one never know where you get an idea and when it happens."
He also stressed upon the fact that the leadership is under continuous stress. It is important for the leader to be intuitive with antennas to pre-empt the environment, strengths, weaknesses and opportunities offered to the company.

John Karr said, "Managers need to have 6 capabilities: Learn continuously, Collaborate and work in teams; Global outlook with local touch, Ability to innovate; Balancing Efficiency with effectiveness; and Ability to handle people and diversity of stakeholders."
