To cater to the acute shortage and rising demand of qualified faculty for the growing number of Indian B-schools, Indian Institute of Management Indore (IIM I) has decided to increase the scope of intake to its FPM programme.

While the institute encourages candidates with valid scores in exams like CAT and UGC, candidates without any formal test can also apply. Further, it is encouraging faculty members of other B-schools to upgrade their skills.

Sharing the acute faculty shortage facing IIMs, Dr Kamal K Jain, Chairperson of the FPM programme at IIM Indore, told MBAUniverse.com, "IIMs have been asked by the Government to increase their intake, six new IIMs are in the pipeline, private business schools are growing by leaps and bounds, faculty shortage in such a scenario is more than obvious."

According to IIM Indore, for candidates who haven't taken any tests like CAT, GMAT, GRE, GATE, UGC, CSIR-JRF, IIM Indore will conduct its own research aptitude test to assess the suitability of the candidates. Candidates who have appeared in CAT 2008 but have not opted for FPM of IIM Indore in the CAT application form are also encouraged to apply.

Apart from this, IIM Indore has initiated a special scheme for Faculty of Business Schools or Universities where applicants from such B-schools who fulfill certain criteria will be automatically short-listed for the selection interview. The criteria are that the faculty should be a regular full-time faculty of business schools recognized by AICTE or business/management departments of recognized universities and have a minimum of 3 years full-time teaching experience.

Dr Jain further adds, "The reason for relaxing admission norms is based on R C Bhargava Committee report entitled "Negotiating The Big Leap IIMs: From Great Teaching Institutions to Thought Leadership Centres" submitted in September 2008 which observes, "The inability of IIMs to fill all the sanctioned posts and the shortage of qualified persons to teach in business schools is a result of the inadequate number of persons doing doctoral programmes. The numbers of PhDs getting qualified is smaller than the demand. There is an expectation that since IIMs are publicly funded they should increase the output of their doctoral programmes that supply matches the demand."

According to IIM Indore, candidates can apply for the FPM programme till the end of February.
