Kishore Biyani to preside over IIM L Convocation 2007

The Indian Institute of Management Lucknow (IIM-L) will be holding its 21st annual convocation on March 17. Kishore Biyani, CEO, Future Group, and managing director, Pantaloon Retail (India) Ltd. will be presiding over the function.

According to information shared by IIM Lucknow with MBAUniverse.com, 282 students will be receiving their degrees. Of these, 264 students are from the institute’s 21st batch of the postgraduate program and 14 from the second batch of the postgraduate program in Agri-business Management; 3 are part of the Fellow Program, while 1 student is part of the International Exchange program. 

Kishore Biyani is the founder of Pantaloon Retail, one of India’s leading retail companies that operates multiple chains including Pantaloons (apparel chain), Big Bazaar (hypermarket chain), Food Bazaar (supermarket chain), Central (chain of seamless malls), and other specialty formats.

Biyani led the company’s foray into retail in 1997 and it is now part of the Future Group. He was recently awarded the International Retailer of the Year 2007 by the US-based National Retail Federation (NRF). 

In terms of placements, IIM-L’s 278 graduating students were successfully placed this year. Overall, 554 offers were made to 278 students (against 491 offers last year), including 28 international offers (against 24 last year). 

To build entrepreneurial talent, IIM-L has the Centre for Entrepreneurial Ventures, that offer short duration programs for Small and Medium Enterprises and conducts case studies and written papers on SMEs and family businesses in India. Until now, the institute has conducted 72 management development programs, for 1,550 top and senior level management executives – quite an achievement in itself! And for the first time it conducted a two-months general management program for Indian Railways’ traffic services officers.  

Over 2006-07, Rs 48 lakh-worth need-based scholarships were disbursed among 86 students in addition to the regular Aditya Birla and Ratan Tata scholarships.

Aiming to be a global, socially-conscious, integrated school of management, IIM-L has international partnerships with 20 institutes in 11 countries. 

It recently inaugurated its second campus at NOIDA, which will offer a three-year postgraduate program in management for working managers. 

Situated at the outskirts of the historic and culturally rich city of Lucknow, IIM-L was set up in 1984. The Institute’s mission is “to help improve the management of the corporate and the non-corporate sectors and also the public systems, through pursuit of excellence in management education, research, consultancy and training”.
