MBA Placements 2009: Global Consulting firms, Finance Majors hire big at IIM Bangalore

The Final Placement Process at IIM Bangalore concluded on Monday, March 9.

At the end of Slot 3 of the process, despite tough market conditions and the fear that the global meltdown would affect it adversely, IIM B managed to place its students in leading global and Indian companies.
 
Leading global Consulting firms flocked down to IIMB along with some of the biggest Marketing firms. The consulting recruiters who visited the IIMB campus were Boston Consulting Group, McKinsey & Co, Bain & Co, Arthur D Little, Deloitte, Accenture, and Diamond. This year also witnessed the consulting major Booz & Co recruiting students for the first time during Final Placements. Renowned PE firms such as ChrysCapital and Baring Private Equity also recruited from IIM Bangalore. Some of the major banks that recruited this year were Standard Chartered, American Express, Citigroup, HSBC, etc.

Overall, 25% of the batch accepted a position in a consulting career, known for its demand for multi-functional skills, cutting across Finance, Strategy and Marketing. This was again the highest across IIMs and a strong testimony to the pedigree of students at IIMB. Boston Consulting Group was the single largest recruiter among the Consulting firms in this year’s placement, inducting 10 IIMB students in their fold. The other sectors that have seen significant number of positions being offered include Finance (29%), Marketing (16%), and General Management (16%).

"The increasing number of Global recruiters bears a strong testimony to the maturing global reputation of IIMB," says IIM B. This year, the IIMB campus hosted leading multinationals like McKinsey & Co, Boston Consulting Group, Bain & Co, Deutsche Bank, Merrill Lynch, Royal Bank of Scotland, HSBC, and UAE Exchange amongst others.

Renowned firms like Booz & Co, Aviva, TVS Capital, visited the IIMB campus for the first time for Final Placements, bringing diversity to the list of recruiters both in profiles and geographies on offer. UAE Exchange International offered positions in Dubai and the middle-east, increasing the global reach of IIM Bangalore students.

A total of 64 students were placed in Slot Zero. This marks IIM Bangalore as the preferred destination for global and Indian firms to recruit from, even in tough markets like these.

A total number of 98 students (representing 40% of the batch) were placed on Slot one that boasted of a huge diversity in terms of the jobs and positions offered.

The international offers continued to pour in on Slot One with companies like UAE Exchange, Enzen and others recruiting IIMB students for foreign postings.

A total of 97 companies confirmed participation of which the number of Slot Zero and international positions comes to over 70 students. This year’s process witnessed 39 new firms visiting IIM Bangalore, over last year’s Final placements. These firms reflected the broadening preferences of the students at IIM Bangalore in terms of the sectors in which they operate. Thus companies like Career Launcher and TIME represented the educational sector while the green energy sector was represented by firms like Ecologix and Enzen which even offered international postings. Companies that recruited in the Oil & Gas and related services domain were GAIL, IOCL, BPCL, Castrol, OWS, etc.

A total of 7 students opted out of the final placements process to realize their dream of becoming entrepreneurs. Having polished their management as well as leadership skills over a period of two years, these individuals will now go about setting up their own enterprises based on ideas that our dear to them. 

20% of the graduating batch at IIM Bangalore is composed of women, again the highest across IIMs. Over 40% of women were placed in Slot Zero firms.
