Finesse, the Finance Club of SJMSOM organized The Finance Continuum 2009 on July 18 with the theme ‘Changing Global Financial Landscape: Opportunities and challenges for India.’ Anup Bagchi, Executive Director, ICICI Securities, while addressing the MBA program students, stressed upon the need to identify and track the lead indicators to any crisis rather than focusing on the lag indicators. “Never lose the opportunity in a crisis,” was his key message. He said developments in the real economy and the financial markets point to a period of moderation. Taking the discussions forward Somak Ghosh, Group President-Corporate Finance & Development Banking, Yes Bank, spoke about Inclusive Finance and converting challenges into opportunities. He stressed on the need for market based solutions catering to ‘bottom of the pyramid’ businesses. On a parting note he said, “BOP markets offer commercially viable opportunities with significant growth potential.”

Other eminent speakers who inspired and shared their knowledge with the MBA program students of the MBA School were Ajay Garg, MD & CEO, Equirus Capital; Nirakar Pradhan, Chief Investment Officer, Future Generali; Prachetas Raikar, Head, Global Banking Risk, HSBC; Abhijit Phadnis, Former Director, Head Finance Administration & Operations, Credit Suisse First Boston (I) and PhD Scholar at SJMSOM, IITB; Naveen Gupta, Head, Private Bank Treasury, Standard Chartered Bank; Anant Rao, Dy Head, Derivatives, SBI Cap Securities and Ananda Bhoumik, Senior Director, Fitch Ratings.

On July 19, Marktrix, the marketing club of Shailesh J. Mehta School of Management (SJMSOM), IIT Bombay conducted their Annual Marketing Conclave – The Marketing Continuum 2009 on July 19 at the MBA School. The theme for this year’s Marketing Continuum was “New Age Marketing – Challenges and Strategies.” The event was inaugurated by Dr. Karuna Jain, Head of the Department of SJMSOM. The event consisted of discussions, lectures and business games on topics like relationship marketing, rural marketing, interactive marketing, experiential marketing and technological marketing.

The Marketing Continuum 2009 saw eminent speakers from the industry. The noteworthy speakers of the day were Paritosh Joshi, President, Star India Pvt. Ltd.; Dr. Pragnya Ram, Group Executive President, Corporate Communication, Aditya Birla Group; Sudhanshu Vats, Vice President, Hindustan Unilever Ltd;   Darshana Bhatt, Marketing Head, Loop Telecom;   K V Sridhar, National Creative Director, Leo Burnett India and   Niteen Bhagwat, Executive Director and CEO, Cogito Consulting.
 
Paritosh Joshi delivered his address on the lines of New Age Marketing theories and practices. He sited the increasing importance of the customers by stating the fact that 40 per cent of the new product innovations come from the customers. “The shift of the companies has been towards customer empowerment and co-creation,” said Joshi.

Pragnya Ram shared important insights on the complexity of communications and the universe of brand delivery. She talked about Image Identity and Reputation Management by citing examples of Aditya Birla Group.  Meanwhile, Sudhanshu Vats spoke on the holistic Brand building. “Brands have to stand for value, benefit society and provide meaning to the consumer,” stressed Vats. He focused on the importance of ‘doing well by doing good.’

Stressing the rising significance of the Customer Relationship Management, Darshana Bhatt cited examples from different sectors to emphasize on the changing customer preferences and the role of social media marketing in the making and managing of brands. KV Sridhar interacted with the MBA program students on new age media and advertising and highlighted the changing rules of advertising and the new media available to reach out the entire gamut of customers. His talk was complemented with videos and movie clips on the conjunction of the internet with advertising.

Niteen Bhagwat talked about blogs and Consumer Generated Media becoming genuine source of information for he consumers. He spoke on how the new age advertising channels and the methods employed by brands to exploit these new avenues. According to a spokesperson from SJMSOM, “The continuum brought out a melange of ideas, with luminaries from the corporate arena getting bowled over by the upcoming marketing wizards.”
