Apparel Export Promotion Council launches Institute of Apparel Management

To address the growing manpower needs of the apparel and fashion industry, the Institute of Apparel Management (IAM), will offer three one-year programs in apparel management out of its Gurgaon campus in the NCR region.

The institute is promoted by the AEPC Society for Human Resource Development, that falls under the aegis of Apparel Export Promotion Council, sponsored by Ministry of Textile, Government of India.

The institute is offering a one-year full-time PG program in Apparel Marketing & Merchandising, a one-year part-time PG program in Apparel Export Merchandising and a one-year part-time PG program in Apparel Retail Merchandising. Aspirants can apply for these programs by 14th August, 2007.

Talking about the need for such programs, Mr. Vijay Agarwal, Chairman, AEPC, said, “The pace of globalization in the apparel industry has accelerated in the past four years. The mandate for IAM is to create a new cadre of management professionals who can understand the dynamics of the global business environment of the apparel industry.”

The academic council of the institute has several respected academicians and business leaders as members. They include Dr. Ravi Shankar, Chairperson (International Collaboration & Capacity Development), IIFT; Dr. Kusum Chopra, ex-professor & Chairperson, NIFT; Dr. S. M. Ishtiaque, Professor & Head - Department of Textile Technology, IIT, Delhi; Ms. Sharmila Nadkarni, Head- Sourcing & Product Development, Big Bazaar; Dr. Mukul Gupta, Professor of Marketing & Dean - Research & Strategic Planning, MDI; Mr. Sanjeev Mohanty, CEO - Benetton India; and Mr. Harminder P. Sahni, MD, Technopak Advisors (P) Ltd.

According to IAM, the one-year full-time PG program in Apparel Marketing & Merchandising will include a six-week internship with a leading apparel company in India or a 6-week overseas visit comprising of a modular program and international exposure. This program is open for graduates.
The one-year part-time PG program in Apparel Export Merchandising will have a 4-week internship in India or abroad which would help students get an intensive industry exposure and apply the knowledge gained to the actual workplace. The one-year part-time PG program in Apparel Retail Merchandising will have a 4-week internship in India or abroad. To get into these two programs, one has to be a graduate with preferably around 1-year experience in related fields.
IAM says students will benefit from a close partnership with approximately 8,000 apparel manufacturers / exporters.

The Apparel Export Promotion Council (www.aepcindia.com) is a non-profit industry body incorporated in 1978; it’s the nodal agency for the promotion of readymade garments from India. The council has more than 8,000 apparel exporters as its members.
