In a bid to provide global exposure, S P Jain Institute of Management & Research (SPJIMR) has sent its 1-year batch of post graduate program in management (PGPM) to the US and the UK for a three-week international immersion.

Students of all the four specializations – marketing, finance, operations and information management – are availing themselves of this unique opportunity of interacting with faculty members of reputed institutes, acquiring specialized knowledge & skills and getting industry exposure at some of the globally-acclaimed corporate houses.

Students of information management are visiting McCombs School at the University of Texas in Austin, one of the top five B-schools for information management as ranked by the US News & World Report. The specialization has 49 students and they are supposed to acquire expertise on IT strategy, innovation and business intelligence.

The operations management cohort that has 19 students is going to Michigan State University, one of the premiere institutes for advanced supply chain management.

The objective of the international immersion program (from September 24 to October 12) is to "provide participants with advanced and in-depth knowledge in their areas of specialization,” Dr Indu Niranjan, deputy director of PGPM, said.

For the finance and marketing specialisations, SPJIMR is experimenting with a different model in London. While the goal of cutting edge and world-class inputs is maintained, students get the best-of-breed faculty from multiple B-schools. Selected faculty members from Cambridge University, Imperial College London, Hult and City University are conducting advanced courses in marketing and finance.

Not only does the international immersion features advanced course work, it includes visits to international corporates such as Dell Computers, Pentland Brands and UPS Logistics Hub.

According to professor Malay Krishna, international coordinator, the US and UK embassies are helping this initiative to a large extent.

The first year students are being accompanied by faculty members from their respective specializations. This initiative of international immersion brings in a good mix of international faculty into the PGPM program.
On returning to Mumbai, students will pursue electives across specialisations, completing the program in December 2012.
