Union HRD Minister Dr M M Pallam Raju has said that the government is ‘not worried’ on the closure of more than 200 PGDM institutes as this is only a part of ‘market correction’ process.

“The closure of B-schools is only a process of market correction and government is not worried about these closures. The recent closures indicate to the sustainability of quality MBA institutes only,” the Union Minister said. He was responding to a question by MBAUniverse.com on the sidelines of 2-day IIM meet in Goa that ended on June 1.

Dr Pallam Raju further added that “Emphasis of education system has to be on quality and only quality institutions will be able to sustain.”
The Minister also said that the government has been laying emphasis on quality and the related processes like accreditation. “Improvement in the quality can be brought with good accreditation and government lays great emphasis on ensuring quality through accreditation,” he said.

The Union HRD Minister earlier, while inaugurating the conference, had exhorted B-schools to focus on finding solutions of ‘real issues' like challenges of urbanization, governance and other national and global problems. He asked IIMs and other management institutes in India to take on larger challenges and not merely confine themselves to their academic interests.

Praising the role of B-schools like Indian Institute of Management for taking initiative on larger issues facing Indian economy and society at large, the Union Minister said, “It is good that IIMs have started working in this direction. But all B-schools should work towards solving the regional issues.”

The Pan IIM conference on "Emerging Issues in Management" was jointly hosted by Indian Institutes of Management. The two-day conference began on May 31 in Goa. The IIM Summit though named ‘World Management Conference’ was pre-dominantly focused on IIMs.  The meet was attended by IIM directors and their faculty members.

The discussions at the meet focused on intellectual outputs of IIMs and quality research undertaken by IIMs. There was virtually no discussion on 3000+ non-IIM B-schools in India.
