"The Indian Army produces leaders of character and competence, who are only taught to win at all cost as there are no runners-up in war" Gen Bikram Singh former Chief of Army Staff

BML Munjal University (BMU), founded by The Hero Group, hosted ‘BMU Leadership Series’ event on its campus featuring the highly decorated former chief of army staff, General Bikram Singh, as Chief Guest. General Singh delivered leadership lecture on ‘The Achievers’ sharing his valuable insights on the attitudes and practices of a truly effective person-in-charge.

General Bikram Singh, PVSM, UYSM, AVSM, SM, VSM is a former Chief of Army Staff of the Indian Army (COAS), who headed the Eastern Command prior to taking over as the 25th COAS. He was also the Chairman of the Chiefs of Staff Committee (CoSC) of the Indian armed forces.

Leadership lesson series was a departure from the regular learning format for students, and the goal was to provide them with inputs from real-life achievers. General Singh captivated the audience with his accounts. One word of advice he had for his young listeners was to set attainable goals for themselves, and to always have a time-frame for accomplishment.

Inspiring the future managers to face the career challenges in life and emerge only winner at all cost, Gen Singh said “The Indian Army produces leaders of character and competence, who are only taught to win at all cost as there are no runners-up in war”. He narrated how when a second lieutenant passes out from the training academy, and is asked about his aim in life, the prompt response is always, “I want to command my unit!” which for all young officers is an attainable goal.  Later, as they empower themselves, they look at the higher rungs of the ladder.

In his view since there was continuity in leadership one should afford to dream big. He encouraged students to dream big and assiduously empower themselves to be able to realize their dreams. Also, it was important to be a worthy member of the team and as a leader you should take everyone along. “Dreams are not those that you see when you are asleep, dreams are those that don’t let you sleep” he said.

General Singh touched upon a variety of attributes leaders require to lead their organisations to success. A good leader in his view needs to possess certain attributes which includes the moral, physical and emotional attributes. In specific terms, some of these are strong will, self control, self discipline, balance, stability and a professional bearing. One needs to continue to work in order to improve one’s self. In this regard he emphasized the need to hone one’s technical, interpersonal and conceptual skills.

The university also hosted guest speakers including Mr. Arun Maira, ex-India Chairman, Boston Consulting Group, Prof. Raghu Rau, the Sir Evelyn de Rothschild professor of Finance of Cambridge and Mr. Arijit Ghosh, President of Honeywell Aerospace to expose students to industry leaders on-campus.
