Providing the first-of-its-kind facility in Karnataka to facilitate researchers to use micro-data the office of the Registrar General, India, New Delhi, Ministry of Home Affairs, Govt. of India, has set up a Census workstation at the Indian Institute of Management Bangalore (IIMB). The facility is open to all, including those who have not enrolled or are not a part of IIM Bangalore. The workstation will be fully equipped with all the facilities for research on confidential micro-data from Census 2001 and Census 2011.

“Analytics and big-data is one of the primary research areas of IIMB and this association with the Office of the Registrar General will further strengthen the analytics and big-data research focus at IIMB,” said Professor U. Dinesh Kumar, Chairperson, Data Centre and Analytics Lab.

The objective for setting up the workstation is to permit qualified researchers with an optimum use of anonymized micro-data from census for in-depth research by allowing access for generating cross-tabulations which are not published by the Census. Such research would allow greater utilization of data by way of generating cross-tabulations from confidential micro-data not otherwise possible by using aggregate level data available in public domain. An in-depth study might also contribute towards using improved methodology of data collection during census as well as identifying strengths and weaknesses of the micro-data.
