Dr. Srinivasan R Iyengar has been appointed as the new Director of JBIMS Mumbai. He took charge on October 16, 2021. He succeeds Dr Kavita Laghate, who was director of JBIMS since 2018. Speaking to MBAUniverse.com, Dr Iyengar shared his vision and plans for building on rich JBIMS legacy.

Dr. Srinivasan R Iyengar, a faculty at JBIMS Mumbai, has been appointed as the new Director of the Institute. He took charge on October 16, 2021. Speaking to MBAUniverse.com after taking change, Dr Iyengar said, “JBIMS is a top B-school with great Alumni network, who are top business personalities and CXOs in India’s leading companies. We plan to build on this rich legacy with many new initiatives.”

Dr Srinivasan Iyengar is a Professor in the area of Strategic Management and Marketing at Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies (JBIMS) and visiting faculty at IIM Indore and IIM Sambalpur. He succeeds Dr Kavita Laghate, who was the Director of JBIMS since 2018. Prior to joining JBIMS in 2015, Dr Iyengar was a faculty at the KJ Somaiya Institute of Management Studies & Research and VESIMSR Mumbai.

Sharing a strong belief in the legacy of his institution, Dr Srinivasan Iyengar told MBAUniverse.com, “JBIMS Mumbai is one of the preeminent management institutions of India. We plan to build on the rich legacy with many new initiatives in coming months. We are planning new value added courses in the area of Family Business and even an Executive MBA.”

When asked if JBIMS has not kept pace with rising competition from New IIMs and Private B-schools in last decade, Dr Iyengar said, “As a professor of strategy, I am not focused on competition. I believe that there is plenty of scope for all good management institutions to grow and contribute to nation and society.”

Counting the strengths of his institution, Dr Iyenger said, “JBIMS has no real competition as we are a unique institution. More than 1.2 lakh students apply for admission here through CET because we offer great education and top placements. Infact, JBIMS alumni is perhaps the best in the country!”  

A passionate teacher, researcher, author, trainer, consultant and interested in consistent learning & sharing knowledge, Dr Iyengar holds PhD in Management from Mumbai University. His areas of interests are Strategic Management, International Business, Retail Shoppers behaviour. He has more than 20 years of experience in corporate and academics. Dr Iyengar has authored five text books which include Mall Management, Strategic Retail Management and Cases in Retail Management. His recently published case studies are with IVEY and Case center. He is a member on the Advisory Board of Journal of Business Retail and Marketing Business Management (JBRMR), Journal of Development Research (JDR).  He is editor in chief of Journal of Indian Retail (JIR).

A strong votary of Indian management and business practices and ethos, Dr Iyengar told MBAUniverse.com that he soon plans to offer a unique course in ‘Indian Business History’. “Indian Economic and Business Model is unique and should be understood by management community. Not all Western Models are suited for a rich and diverse country like India,” Dr Iyengar said.

Founded in 1965, the Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies (JBIMS) is the third oldest management institute in India. JBIMS was established by the University of Mumbai in collaboration with the Graduate School of Business, Stanford University. The flagship MMS (Master of Management Studies) programme was conceived under the aegis of the Mumbai University. JBIMS is rated among the top business schools in India.
