The 6 new IIMs are expected to announce their respective shortlists comprising about 8000 candidates when the admission process in rest 13 IIMs is over with generation of final merit lists.

Great opportunity to get an IIM without much hurdle and based only on CAT 2015 scores could open up again in the month of May 2016 for those who do not make to the final merit list or are not shortlisted by rest 13 older IIMs. The 6 new IIMs propose to ask for the expression of interest from the candidates who have scored a bit lower percentile in CAT 2015 around first week of May 2016.

Shortlist in May 2016
These IIMs are expected to announce their respective shortlists comprising about 8000 candidates when the admission process in rest 13 IIMs is over with generation of final merit lists. Clarifying the admission process for PGP 2016-18, IIM Sirmaur mentored by IIML says “IIM Sirmaur will ask for expression of interest in the first week May 2016, after which merit list will be prepared as per the guidelines stated in the admission policy document.”

Out of the 6 new IIMs namely IIM Amritsar, IIM BodhGaya, IIM Nagpur, IIM Sambalpur, IIM Sirmaur and IIM Visakhapatnam, only 2 have announced their admission policy and rest 4 are yet to finalize their minimum required CAT 2015 percentile and other key weightage areas to be accounted for in the admission and selection process.

Admission Process after receipt of expression of interest
The shortlisting process at new IIMs would begin after they receive expression of interest from the eligible candidates. However they have not clarified why they need to have expression of interest in academic session 2016-17 again on the lines of 2015-16 since the specific names of these IIMs were included in CAT 2015 registration form.

Last year the expression of interest from the candidates was required as at the time of filling the CAT 2014 registration form these IIMs were included by the name of their respective states and not by their location not their temporary or permanent site was finalized. As such to reaffirm that candidates were still interested to get admission in the new IIMs after their location city and area was defined, the candidates were asked to confirm and express their interest in the new IIMs. Not much utility may be derived to repeat the process in admission 2016 as the CAT 2015 registration document amply specified each of 19 IIMs. However, in case the candidates are asked to express their interest in the new IIMs, they need to submit it.

Similar admission process expected
It appears, that all the 6 new IIMs who started functioning with their maiden batch in 2015 may adopt similar admission process and may agree on reducing further the minimum required CAT 2015 percentile as has been done by IIM Sirmaur and IIM BodhGaya. While IIM Sirmaur has asked for minimum CAT 2015 percentile of 80, IIM BodhGaya has reduced it to 90 in admission 2016 from 96.3 in 2015.

You may expect further reduction in the minimum required CAT 2015 percentile score by the time the shortlist is announced by these IIMs in the month of May 2016 after the PI-WAT process is over in all the other 13 IIMs and those who could not get figured in the final merit list generated by these IIMs due to their low CAT 2016 scores or low score in PI-WAT, may get the opportunity of admission in these new IIMs.

CAT 2015 scores: Major weightage area
Apart from having the good score in CAT 2015, it is very much possible that these IIMs may not award much weightage to other factors like work experience, academic profile and diversity, gender diversity.

It is expected while CAT 2015 score will be the sole criterion to shortlist the candidates, the final merit list may also award 80% weightage to CAT scores only and rest other factors are included in 20% weightage. IIM Sirmaur has clarified that final admission offer would be sent to those candidates who figure in the merit list to be generated with 80% weightage to CAT 2015 scores and 20% weightage to other factors.

GD-PI: May not be the part of process
Unlike 6 other IIMs whose PI-WAT process is coordinated by IIM Kashipur, the 6 new IIMs have varying admission criteria. The final admission offer by IIM Sirmaur will be finalized without conduct of any GD-PI process. According to IIM Sirmaur “There will be no GD/PI for admission to IIM Sirmaur this year.”

However, IIM Bodh Gaya mentored by IIM Calcutta proposes to conduct PI-WAT and has decided to award the highest 40% weightage to PI-WAT scores in generation of final merit list.

Rest 4 IIMs namely IIM Amritsar, IIM Nagpur, IIM Sambalpur, IIM Visakhapatnam have not yet announced their admission policy and selection criteria which may be slightly different from other 2 IIMs.

Higher intake
Although none of the new IIMs have announced their proposed intake for the second PGP batch, it is expected that each of them would increase this number from 60 to 140 as decided by MHRD in Cabinet Meeting held on June 24, 2015. Since none of these 6 new IIMs are running with full intake, the liberal approach to shortlist the candidates to get the full intake in 2016 is anticipated to be adopted by them.

Accordingly, the candidates with a percentile of 80 overall and 75 sectional in CAT 2015 can be shortlisted by these new IIMs and may also find their names in finally generated merit list. In their admission process for PGP 2015-17 these new IIMs used PI-WAT scores from IIM Udaipur that coordinated Common Admission Process (CAP) for new IIMs and also assigned separate weights for them in generation of merit list. The CAP 2016 is being co-ordinated by IIM Kashipur and it is very much possible that the new IIMs might seek the merit list after CAP 2016 is over and then finalise their shortlist based on expression of interest to arrive at the merit list and admission offers.
