IIM Jammu gets cabinet approval; 54 students enrolled; IIM Lucknow is mentor IIM
The Union Cabinet on Thursday, October 13, formally approved the setting up of an IIM in Jammu. The cabinet meeting was chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The student intake for the first batch (2016-18) of Post Graduate Diploma Programme (PGDP) in
IIM Jammu will be located on a temporary campus at the Old Government College of Engineering and Technology from the academic year of 2016-17. The project will involve a cost of Rs. 61.90 crore on temporary campus for the four years from 2016 to 2020. Steps would be taken for setting up the campus at Jammu and an out-campus in Kashmir region in future, a government statement said.
The Cabinet also approved the formation of an IIM Jammu Society under the Societies Registration Act, 1860. IIM Jammu will be run and managed by the Society with a Board of Governors (BOGs) to be constituted by the Central government.
With IIM Jammu coming into existence, there are 20 IIMs in India. At present, there are 19 IIMs in the country, out of which 13 are located at Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Kolkata, Lucknow, Indore, Kozhikode, Shillong, Ranchi, Raipur, Rohtak, Kashipur, Trichy and Udaipur. Six other IIMs, which were started in 2015, are located at Amritsar, Sirmaur, Nagpur, Bodhgaya, Sambalpur and Vishakhapatnam.
Earlier, in June this year, IIM Lucknow was given the responsibility by MHRD to mentor IIM Jammu. IIML had conducted the admission process successfully, by admitting a record 54 students. Preparatory classes for the first batch of IIM Jammu were held in Noida campus of IIM Lucknow in August 2016.
