IIM Calcutta Appoints Prof Uttam Kumar Sarkar as its New Director with immediate effect
Professor Uttam Kumar Sarkar from the Management Information Systems Group of the Institute has been appointed as the new director of IIM Calcutta with immediate effect. Consequent upon the resignation of Prof Anju Seth, the erstwhile director of IIM Calcutta, the position had fallen vacant. With the appointment of Prof Sarkar, an alumnus of IIT Kharagpur, IIM Calcutta has got its full time director.
The Board of Governors of the oldest Indian Institute of Management, IIM Calcutta has appointed Professor Uttam Kumar Sarkar from the Management Information Systems Group of the Institute as the new director of IIM Calcutta with immediate effect.
Professor Sarkar, a professor at the Management Information Systems Group of the Institute, has obtained his B.Tech, M.Tech., and Ph.D. degrees in Computer Science and Engineering from IIT Kharagpur. He has an outstanding academic record, and is a leading researcher in the field of information systems with numerous publications in prestigious international journals to his credit.
Prof Sarkar has vast experience in key leadership roles in India and extensive exposure to universities and academic communities worldwide. He was selected from a large number of highly accomplished and qualified aspirants from India and abroad, through a very rigorous search process that lasted several months.
Congratulating Professor Uttam Kumar Sarkar, the Chairperson of the Board of Governors of IIM Calcutta, Shri Shrikrishna Kulkarni, said, “Professor Sarkar knows IIM Calcutta intimately: its history, culture and the aspirations of its large body of faculty, students, alumni, staff, Board, and all stakeholders. Moreover, he is acutely aware of “what needs to be done and how it must be done” to help IIM Calcutta achieve its global aspirations."
IIM Calcutta was running without the permanent director since March 2021 as consequent upon the resignation of Prof Anju Seth, the first woman director of IIM Calcutta, a year before the end of her tenure, the Board of Governors had appointed professor, Subir Bhattacharya, the senior most professor as the acting director of the institute.
It is a timely move for the benefit of IIM Calcutta and all its stake holders that the oldest IIM of India has got its director in time with the beginning of new academic session.
