MBAUniverse.com recently interviewed Professor Xavier about his views on what makes VIT, Vellore a unique institute and how a B School aspirant should choose a B School for MBA.

Interview:

Q.   Lets start with a question about how should B school aspirants choose a B school? What according to you are the criteria which they need to consider before going for admission?

A.  A B School aspirant should first of all introspect whether he has the aptitude for doing an MBA. Successful MBAs tend to have wider interests and enjoy working with people. If these two conditions are fulfilled, then the score they get in the entrance examinations like CAT, XAT and MAT will determine the kind of Institute they can get in. If scores are not good enough for the top tier B Schools, then they should look for the schools with good reputation, infrastructure, faculty and placement record.

If some of you are very of the area they would like to specialize in, like finance, marketing or HR, then they should check-out for faculty details in those areas. If they also have a clear idea as to they would like to get in to sect-oral courses like retailing, media, construction, cyber crime etc. then they should look for Institutions that offer such specialized courses.

A. I have totally revamped the programme starting with the mission and core values. We have made a list of more than 250 skills that the Industry expects from MBAs. As I mentioned earlier the curriculum has been totally revamped to impart these skills and produce business ready managers.

I have introduced technology in a big way to record classes, monitor progress of the students and help faculty to effectively deliver courses. I am getting class-room capture solution installed in 15 class-rooms. I have also acquired a unique LMS - Saras that is capable of monitoring students 24/7. Students will be given video lectures and e-books that they have to go through and write a learning diary before they come to class. After the class they have to engage in a discussion in a social media platform which also will get graded.

QWhat are the basic admission criteria like fees, number of seats, exams scores accepted and expected cut-offs?

A. The tuition fees for VIT Business School are Rs 5 lakhs. The University has 180 seats in its Vellore campus and 120 in its Chennai campus. As far as the exam scores accepted by VIT are concerned, this year we are looking for scores above 65 in CAT and its equivalent in other admission tests.
