Heads or Tails! This side or that side.

We are not talking about negatives and positives but two very different scenarios which divide the Indian MBA aspirants every year. On one side, there are those who have secured admission or were forced to take admission and on the other hand are those who haven’t been able to secure admission or for better prospects have decided to drop a year.

Whichever side you may belong to, both the sides have its own benefits and losses. This article will not deal with losses but will surely tell you what you must do now as the next step irrespective of whichever side you belong to- head or tail!

I leave on the readers’ prerogative as to whom they consider as Heads and whom as Tail.

To start with let’s talk about those smiling and relieved faces who have received their Admission offers and have decided to pursue MBA this year. While the dust of stress has settled, it’s the anxiety fever that will soon grip you when your session will start. So what all to expect? What all to prepare before hand? Will you be able to live up to the expectations? Let’s get answers to all these.

MBAuniverse.com has earlier published artice highlighting what you must do after learning that you are accepted to an MBA College. Click below to read:

I have been selected to MBA college, Now What!

What to do after securing Admission in MBA College

Once you are through with fee deposits, document verifications and all other official procedures, it’s time to look beyond.

- Orientation

Every B-school provides orientation programming to assist in the transition from graduation years to MBA course. Its goal is to prepare students for a world-class academic journey, familiarize them to campus life, promote their engagement and successfully start their first class on a high note.

At orientation, you will be introduced to current student leaders, academic advisors and campus resources to help you get a feel of where you are and to help you be successful in your next two important years at the B-school.

- Housing

Though it’s not required, an essential component of a richer MBA experience is living on campus. Studies show first-year students who live on campus out-perform their peers living elsewhere. On- campus hostel facility offers first-year students a sense of community while also providing opportunities for campus involvement and leadership.

Although, not every B-school in India has an on-campus accommodation facility but don’t get disheartened and look for accommodation facilities near by your college. Living with classmates will help you not only to gel together but will also help you to be connected with the College routines and informations.
But, pay extra caution while choosing your room mates!

-Explore the city
Last but not the least; explore your city where you are currently studying. Every city in India has its own distinguished culture, traditions and places of interest. Must try to move out of its campus now and then and explore the nature and diversity of its city.

You must take some time out and enjoy the experience of the local cuisine, clothes, festivals and traditions.

- Raise your hands

Every B school tries to enhance the overall personality of its students and hence there are many students’ bodies and councils like marketing, alumni, entrepreneur, media cell, cultural club, Placement cell, etc.

Don’t wait for the requests or notices to show up for registrations at different clubs. On the contrary, be proactive and contact your seniors from the first day itself to join a club with an aim to learn to work in a team and contribute. Joining such clubs will give you a well-deserved break from the hectic routine of the first year, and will also give you a chance to showcase your talents and overcome your inhibitions of performing on stage or in a group.

- Share your mantra, Help others

Now that you have achieved what you wanted, it’s your responsibility to guide your future generations as to how they can achieve their goals, how they can achieve high marks in CAT/XAT etc. exams, how to excel in GD PI rounds. MBA Aspirants are looking up to you for Guidance and Motivation. They want to know how you did it and what it takes to be at the Top.

- Get your horns up

One of the most important steps of all in preparing for MBA at B-schools is wrapping your head around the two years ahead. In the next two years, you will meet hundreds of new students, seniors, People who are your idols, Business tycoons, stalwarts from different fields that will amaze you, guide you to achieve your goals.

Perhaps you won’t even realize how fast these two years will fly by.
So, Get excited! No, wait- get your horns up!

What to do if you have taken a year drop

There are many brave and confident minds who have decided to test themselves in the difficult current of MBA exams again this year and didn’t opt for admission to any B-school. Following are must-do-steps for these aspirants:

- Don’t be disheartened

It’s easy to preach than to be in the same shoes, but nevertheless, since you have taken your decision then stick to it. There’s no time to sulk on your past failures. Perhaps now you know the level of competition and hence you know what you need to do be the winner.

Step up your game, work a bit harder, smoothen your rough edges and you will definitely come out with flying colors next year.

- What went wrong

This is very important! You have to analyze what went wrong last time. Why were you eliminated by a particular program? There is no way to tell, but in many cases applicants are rejected because they demonstrated poor "fit." Was it the wrong selection of B-schools, was it your average performance in GDPI or was it your less marks in MBA Entrance exams, figure out the areas where you went wrong. It won’t take you long to know where you faltered and why.
Once you know your weak spot, try to work hard on it, try to strengthen it as much as possible. Soon, you will be able to polish your skills and be ready to challenge the brightest of minds for MBA admission in next year.

- Seek Support

Often, after failures students tend to go in a shell. They keep themselves aloof from the society and friends. You might find it difficult to inform family, friends, and professors of the bad news, but it is essential that you seek social support. Allow yourself to feel upset and acknowledge your feelings, then move forward. If you are rejected to every program to which you apply, reassess your goals, but don’t necessarily give up.

Don’t be a coward, get up on your feet and face the world!

- Finally, You want to do MBA? Right!

It might sound silly, but again you need to ask this to yourself truthfully. Do you want to do MBA? Is MBA meant for you? If your answer is a strong YES, then go ahead and do what is required to achieve your goal.

But, If you have even the slightest of hesitation, it is recommended that you seek expert guidance, counseling and re-consider your other options. In the end, it all depends on what you want and what you believe into.
