FMS & IIMs short listing 2014: Implications will be different in FMS final admission list

The fact that FMS accepts no other score than CAT is one truth and that it has criteria much different than IIMs in short listing the candidates for GDPI round is another truth
The recently published shortlist of candidates for GDPI 2014 at FMS Delhi contains 2572 candidates in all categories against an intake of 216 in flagship full time MBA programme. An approximate ratio of 1:12 (12 candidates shortlisted for 1 seat) appears to have been fixed in short listing the candidates.
FMS Delhi which always used to be one of the first top B schools to announce the shortlist for admission has inordinately delayed the process in 2014. While the shortlists were used to be declared for all the categories in the month of January/February, the entire admission process at FMS Delhi used to be completed in the month of March and the institute tried to keep up this reputation year after year. FMS has been one the top B schools which used to begin its well organized session before any other management institute. The delay in 2014 is of more than 4 months in declaration of shortlist for GDPI round and could result in late beginning of the new session.

FMS and IIMs have different short listing criteria
The fact that FMS accepts no other score than CAT is one truth and that it has criteria much different than IIMs in short listing the candidates for GDPI round is another truth. FMS short listing criteria can bring smiles to many who have not been shortlisted by IIMs not to say of converting the call in the reputed B schools.
No consideration of CAT sectional percentile at FMS
High Sectional percentile is needed for IIMs. This is the major difference in short listing criteria between IIMs and FMS. While IIMs are more concerned on high balanced sectional as well as overall percentile, the major consideration at FMS is overall percentile. The candidates who were not shortlisted by IIMs despite scoring overall percentile of 98-99 but had low sectional percentile, have found a place in FMS shortlist.
On the other hand the candidates with high balanced sectional percentile but low overall CAT percentile of 92-96 have been able to convert the call in one or other IIM but have not been found the place in FMS shortlist 2014.

No weightage for academic profile at FMS
While IIMs give weightage for good academic profile of a candidate and award marks for a better academic record in a range of 20 to 30 on a scale of 100 in short listing the candidates, FMS has no such weightage to award. Candidates for GDPI have been shortlisted on the basis of overall percentile only. Higher the percentile more are the chances to get shortlisted in FMS, has been the straight calculation method.

Work experience and gender diversity have no role to play
FMS wouldnt go into the intricacies of adding extra marks for work experience and gender diversity while short listing the candidates for GDPI. Even the would-be graduates have equal chance of being called in the interview as other graduates with work experience. Candidates from very diverse background can make the grade.

The implications
Let us know what implications it could bring in admission 2014

99+ percentilers stand a better chance
Hundreds of candidates who were not shortlisted by IIMs despite scoring a high overall percentile may hope to get into FMS Delhi. In all probability the candidates with 99+ overall percentile stand a better chance in final admission list, if they do well in GDPI round. A percentile below 99 will have less chances of getting finally selected in FMS even if the candidate has better academic profile and work experience. However the inordinate delay in shortlist declaration may kindle some hope of getting a place in FMS among the candidates with a percentile below 99.
The candidates who have scored a percentile of 98+ but less than 99 are advised to attend the GDPI at FMS with good preparation level. This year chances at FMS are brighter than ever before.

Declaration in delay may reduce the cut off
Almost all the IIMs and other top B schools where CAT high percentilers sought admission in 2014 have closed the process. Thousands of MBA aspirants, who continued waiting for FMS shortlist, ultimately finalised the admission in one or other top B school like one of the 13 IIMs, MDI, IMT and SPJIMR.
The GDPI at FMS will begin on June 20, 2014 and the process will be completed on June 27, 2014. It will take some time to publish final merit list. By this time almost all the top B schools would have started their session. The selected candidates, if still interested in FMS will have to either forego a major chunk of deposited fee in the respective IIM, will have to renegotiate with the respective Bank from which they obtained the study loan and might require to close the study loan account or remain with their earlier preferred B school.
Just in case FMS doesnt get more number of 99+ percentilers it may have to compromise at 98+ and that indication is there as the ratio per seat is for 12 candidates. In 2013 FMS declared a final admission list of 300+ candidates for 100 seats in General category with 450+ in waiting list, in 2014 the number could be more along with higher number of waitlisted candidates since number of the shortlisted candidates must have already joined the IIMs or other top B schools.

GDPI to play major role
Almost all the candidates shortlisted for GDPI at FMS stand on the similar percentile. The only deciding factor is GDPI round. The better you do at final admission round the more weightage you can get. A candidate lagging behind with a little margin can leap ahead of others in the GDPI round with to the point and coherent communication approach.

The expected shape of MBA batch 2014-16
SinceFMS has no system of awarding any weightage to academics, work experience and gender diversity, the shape of the forthcoming MBA batch could be more freshers and less with work experience. There are many regional education boards in India where the marking pattern is tougher than All India education boards like CBSE and ICSE. Candidates shortlisted for GDPI at FMS may not have such fear of losing their admission chances due to low percentage of marks in class 10 or 12 or due to lack of work experience. All the MBA aspirants shall be treated as fresh talent. This talent pool will therefore be treated at par when FMS goes to announce the final admission merit list for batch 2014-16.
The coming batch of MBA students could be of overall high scorers in CAT-2013 but may be having low percentile in one or other section. The batch is expected to comprise candidates without distinguishing and preferring them on the ground of gender diversity.
The last opportunity in 2014; grab it
The candidates with 97 percent marks at school and +2 level are supposed to be treated equal to the students with 70 percent marks. All the candidates who have not so good academic profile but high CAT percentile of 99+ should now put their back to win the GDPI round.
