Five new IIMs announced in Budget 2014; A positive move: MBA Universe.com Analysis

The Government of India has decided to open six new IIMs, one each in Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Bihar, Odisha, Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh.

IMs are considered Indias premier national institutes providing quality education in management and research. IIMs primarily offer post graduate, doctoral and executive education programmes. The flagship programme of IIM, is the two year post graduate diploma popularly known as Master of Business Administration (MBA).

Establishment of IIMs

The Indian Institutes of Management are public establishments with autonomous control over its day to today operations and curriculum. However, the overall strategy of IIMs is governed by the IIM Council, headed by the Minister of Human Resource Development, Government of India. Today, there are 13 IIMs as public autonomous institutes in India with the most recent one, IIM Kashipur opening in 2011.

Current Scenarios and Impacts

Currently there are 13 IIMs in India with a total of 3335 seats. According to AICTE, the total numbers of MBA/PGDM B-schools in India are 3900, which together offer 3, 85,008 seats. Thus, IIMs have only around 1% share of total management seats in India.

Considering 6 more states going to have an IIM each, it will be total of 19 IIMs. The total seats for combined 19 IIMs will reach to 4055 seats thus an increase of above 21% (considering a batch size of 120 for the 6 announced new IIMs). This is a good move by government to expand the total number of quality MBA education seats in India.

Out of the total seats, 27% will be reserved for OBCs, 15% will reserved for SCs and 7.5% seats is reserved for ST category making a total of 49.5%. Hence, the general category will now have around 2047 seats at their disposal, an increase from 1684 seats earlier.

While opening new IIMs is a positive move, the government must make sure to do advance planning before the final roll out. Adequate quality faculty and infrastructure must be assured for all these 6 New IIMs before they are allowed to function as a management institution.

Selection Process of IIMs

Admission to the two year MBA programmes in IIMs is on merit, based on a rigorous selection process comprising of Group Discussions, Written Ability Test, Personal Interview and scores in the Common Admission Test which is commonly known as CAT.

Each IIM shortlists candidates for second stage of selection which may be independent of each other. The process may include Written Ability Test (WAT), Group Discussions (GD) and Personal Interviews (PI). Performance in CAT 2014 examination is an important component in the admission process. IIMs may use previous academic performance of the candidates, relevant work experience and other similar inputs in short listing and ranking of candidates at various stages of the admission process. The processes, academic cut - offs and the weights allocated to the evaluation parameters may vary across IIMs.

Each IIM will send interview letters to the short listed candidates directly. If a candidate is shortlisted for interviews by any IIM, he/she has to comply with the following eligibility verification:
