IIM Kozhikode terminates agreement with Turkey’s Sabancı University in national interest
In the aftermath of Op Sindoor, where Turkish drones invaded the territorial borders of India, the Indian Institute of Management Kozhikode (IIM Kozhikode) has announced the cancellation of its agreement with Sabancı University, Turkey, with immediate effect. The agreement between IIMK and Sabancı, signed in September 2023 for a period of five years, had outlined academic collaboration in the area of student exchange. Citing national interest, IIM Kozhikode has unilaterally decided to nullify the agreement and terminate all associated academic engagements.
Announcing the decision, Prof. Debashis Chatterjee, Director of IIM Kozhikode, said: “At IIM Kozhikode, we place utmost importance on aligning our global engagements with the national interest. The decision to annul the MoU with Sabancı University has been taken after careful consideration and is in keeping with our institutional responsibility to uphold the values and priorities of our nation.” He further added that IIM Kozhikode remains “committed to fostering international collaborations that reflect mutual respect, strategic alignment, and shared national values.”
IIM Kozhikode has informed this decision to Sabancı University and has called for immediate removal of IIM Kozhikode’s name from all official records and websites of the Turkish university.
A few other prominent Indian universities, including Jawaharlal Nehru University, Jamia Millia Islamia and IIT Roorkee, have also announced cancellation of understandings with Turkish University. It remains to be seen if more IIMs and Business Schools in India will review their understandings with Turkish Universities, and cancel them in national interest.
