The Doctoral Programme (PhD) of the Indian Institute of Management Calcutta was started in 1971. It is a full-time doctoral programme to be completed in four to five years. The programme offers opportunities for advanced studies and research in different specializations related to Management Science. The Programme aims to prepare students for careers in teaching and research in management studies and in related disciplines, and for careers in the government, in industry, and in other organizations that require advanced analytical and research capabilities.
On successful completion of the Programme, a student is awarded the Ph.D degree, in his/her area of specialization.
There is no tuition or other programme fee to pursue PhD at IIM Calcutta. From AY 2024-25, each of the IIM Calcutta PhD student is given a stipend that starts at Rs. 42,000/- per month (Pre-CQE), Rs. 45,000/- per month (Post-CQE), and goes upto Rs. 50,000/- (Post-Thesis Proposal) with the student's academic progress. In addition, each student can avail the student development grants of up to Rs. 1,05,000/- for the first year of study, and of up to Rs. 35,000/- per year for subsequent years. The stipend and grants are given for four years, and can be extended for up to one more year on demonstration of satisfactory progress in dissertation work.
Additional financial support is available for Doctoral Students in their dissertation phase in the form of extra funds of up to Rs. 75,000 /- for field research (if needed). Further, students are required to take up Teaching Assistantships as and when available, that pay up to Rs. 33,600 per month (in addition to the stipend).
The monthly HRA of Rs. 10,000/- per month is given to single students and Rs. 15,000/- per month to married students (with family). The Institute also provides financial support to students to attend international conference. Students can also participate in one international workshop in lieu of a conference

IIM Calcutta Doctoral Programme offers specializations in Economics, Finance & Control, Human Resource Management, Management Information Systems, Marketing, Operations Management, Organizational Behaviour, Public Policy and Management, Strategic Management, Operations Research & Systems Analysis, Regional Development, and Sociology.
Upon joining the programme, students go through coursework in 6 terms spread across 2 academic years and complete at least 90 credits. The academic group that a student joins is treated as the Major area of specialization.
In the first year, students take up at least 15 compulsory credit courses (includes 2 compulsory courses on research methods [qualitative and quantitative], for groups requiring students to do these courses in the first year) and 1 compulsory non-credit course in Qualifying Mathematics. In the second year, students have to take 8 courses in major area (out of which at least six should be doctoral-level advanced courses; if a student has already taken any doctoral-level course in the first year, he/she needs to take the remaining number of doctoral-level advanced courses in the second year out of total six). Minimum of 3 doctoral courses of 3 credits each offered by any academic groups (or mix thereof) other than his/her group of specialization should be taken. Besides, 2 compulsory doctoral level courses on research methods (qualitative and quantitative), for academic groups deciding students to do these courses in the second year should be taken. Students are required to take at most two term papers (in lieu of courses) of which at least one term paper must be in the major area.
In the summer vacation at the end of first year, students undertake a project/research work which is treated as equivalent to 2 credit courses.
The qualifying CGPA for first year is 5.5 while that for the whole period of coursework is 6.0. Students failing to meet the cut-off CGPA are required to withdraw from the programme. After successful completion of coursework, students take a CQE (Comprehensive Qualifying Examination) administered by the respective academic group. Upon successful completion of CQE, a student moves into the thesis or dissertation phase.
Students are required to attend a teaching practicum. Students are required to take up Teaching Assistantship over the tenure of Fellowship for at least one diploma course offered by the academic group.

Applications for IIM Calcutta PhD admission should be submitted online with an application fees of Rs.2000 (Gen category) and Rs.1000 (Reserved category) Along with the online application, you have to upload all the relevant certificates and testimonials and furnish details of your referees. The online application starts tentatively in the first/second week of November. You can apply upto maximum two areas of specialization.
