New IIMs to announce shortlist after CAP 2017: 5000 to be shortlisted on reduced CAT 2016 percentile; wait & get an IIM
New IIMs propose to announce their shortlist with reduced CAT 2016 cut offs after CAP 2017 round is over for 9 IIMs
Out of the 7 new IIMs that began operation in 2015-16 with an officially allowed intake of 60 students each, 3 are participating in Common Admission Process (CAP) 2017 being conducted by IIM Rohtak and rest 4 IIMs propose to announce the 1st stage shortlist after Common Admission Process (CAP) 2017 is over for 9 new and newest IIMs.
IIM Visakhapatnam: Not to accept CAP 2017 scores
IIM Visakhapatnam has categorically stated Candidates who are not shortlisted and interviewed by any of the IIMs at Bangalore, Calcutta, Indore, Kozhikode, Lucknow (only for their PGP/PGPM programs) will be required to appear for a personal interview (PI) / Written Ability Test (WAT) to be conducted by IIMV
IIM Visakhapatnam will award highest weightage of 40% to WAT & PI round. It proposes to select candidates on the lines IIM Bangalore will select the candidates for admission to PGP 2017-19 batch.
New IIMs running with fewer students
None of these 7 newest IIMs could get the full intake of students in their 1st and 2nd batches. Now for the PGP 2017-19 these IIMs despite announcing their admission policy with high CAT 2016 percentile cut offs are expected to announce the shortlists with much lower cut offs and may assign higher weightage to other parameters like academics, work experience among others instead of focusing too much on high CAT 2016 percentile.
The dilemma of uncertainty can be understood by the fact that till date IIM Nagpur, IIM Sambalpur have not announced their admission policy and are keeping themselves in wait & watch mode. Besides IIM Nagpur, IIM Jammu, IIM Sirmaur are not participating in CAP 2017 being coordinated for 9 IIMs by IIM Rohtak. The CAP 2017 has already begun in the 2nd week of February and is proposed to be over in a week of so.
IIM Jammu and IIM Sirmaur propose to offer direct admission to the shortlisted candidates. Accordingly candidates should become happy as there would not be any GD-PI round for these IIMs for admission 2017.
Even the IIM Amritsar, IIM Bodhgaya, IIM Sambapur which are participating in the CAP 2017 round do not propose to announce their shortlist before CAP 2017 but might reconsider their admission criteria depending upon the interest shown for admission by the candidates who qualify CAP round. It will be no surprise if these 7 new IIMs shortlist candidates for admission at lower CAT 2016 percentile than already announced
In view of experts it is advisable to wait for the announcement of shortlist by these newest IIMs, if you have scored a percentile of 75 to 80 in CAT 2016.
Hope for an IIM on reduced cut off
Number of CAT takers earlier refrained from expressing any interest for admission to these newest IIMs in view of their high percentile requirement as they could get other better options. As a result, as against the intake of 60 in each of these IIMs, they had to be content with fewer candidates. Later on this requirement was reduced for admission.
These 6 newly inaugurated IIMs were not able to get bare minimum 60 students each and had to be content with 22 to 55 candidates depending upon the strategy they adopted for admission.
It may not be possible for these IIMs to achieve the desired number in PGP 2017-19 batch unless and until they reduce the qualifying CAT 2016 percentile score rationally below 80 and sectional percentile below 75 as has been done by IIM Jammu and IIM Sirmaur.
Accordingly the candidates who have scored between 70 to 75 sectional percentile and 80 overall percentile in CAT 2016 may hope to be shortlisted by these new IIMs. It will offer an opportunity to get into an IIM instead of exploring admission in a lower rung B-school.

IIM Jammu & IIM Sirmaur slash qualifying scores
IIM Jammu and IIM Sirmaur have rationally kept their minimum CAT 2016 score requirement low. It will help the IIM aspirants to choose the preferred IIM and will also enable both these IIMs to get the full intake without compromising the quality as candidates will confirm their interest to these IIMs at the first instance and they wouldnt need to wait for the wait list.
5 other IIMs to reduce the cut offs
IIM BodhGaya, IIM Nagpur, IIM Amritsar, IIM Sambalpur and IIM Visakhapatnam may have to reduce their minimum qualifying CAT 2016 percentile scores from 90 to 80 in order to achieve full intake in 2017.
5000 in shortlist of new IIMs
Even after deciding not to increase the intake this year despite MHRD Ministers suggestion, these new IIMs need to shortlist around 10-12 times of sanctioned intake. Accordingly around 5000 CAT 2016 test takers are expected to be shortlist by these 7 IIMs.
Although after a key Cabinet meeting presided by the Prime Minister Mr Narendra Modi on June 24, 2015 it was announced that all the newest IIMs starting operation in 2015 would have an intake of 140 students each, but, given the fact that no infrastructure was provided to any of the newest IIMs to accommodate the number and no faculty arrangement from the mentor IIM was available to teach such a large batch of 140 students, the mentor IIMs decided to restrict the batch size to 60 students for PGP 2015-17 and 2016-18 batches.
It is anticipated that this batch size is expected to increase to 140 in each of the 7 IIMs in future but not now. Around 10 times of the intake has to be shortlisted and therefore it is expected that around 5000 candidates would be shortlisted by these IIMs for admission in 2017. In case these IIMs decide to increase their intake, the number of shortlisted candidates will also increase accordingly.
It should not surprise you if you find your name figured in the shortlist of these IIMs even after scoring a low percentile in CAT 2016 provided you had opted for these new IIMs while registering for CAT 2016. However you need to wait for the declaration of shortlist by these newest IIMs which is expected after CAP 2017 round is over.
