“Technical and management education continues to undergo transformation in our country. Out of 3334 management institutes, 102 have applied for full closure and many have applied for seat reduction” Dr Anil Sahasrabudhe, AICTE Chairman

The shakeout and consolidation continue in India’s highly fragmented management education market. While hundreds of B-schools have closed down in the past 5 years, many more still want to follow suit. Further, many B-schools are also reducing their capacity. Only institutions that are offering relevant and quality education will survive. This is the key message coming from AICTE Chairman Dr Anil Sahasrabudhe, who spoke at the EPSI Conclave in Delhi on August 21.

Addressing the gathering of Director and Deans, Dr Sahasrabudhe said: “Technical and management education continues to undergo transformation in our country. Out of 3334 management institutes, 102 have applied for full closure and many have applied for seat reduction. Same scenario is playing out in engineering education.”

Calling for quality, Dr Sahasrabudhe said, “Only B-schools that offer quality and relevant education will survive and do well. We need to update our MBA curriculum regularly. We also need to offer new specialization in areas that industry is going into like Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning.”

“Our education institutions must focus on training their faculty and administrators. Leadership development for running education institution is very important,” he added.

The EPSI B-Schools' Leadership Conclave 2018 was held in New Delhi on April 21, 2018. The theme was “Redefining Indian Management Education In Rapidly Transforming World”. Dr. Anil Sahasrabudhe was the Chief Guest for the conclave.

Representing ESPI, Dr. H Chaturvedi, Alternate President EPSI & Director BIMTECH, said: “AICTE has transformed under the leadership of Dr Sahasrabudhe. There is a positive change. As a result of a lot of dialogue and consultation between AICTE and EPSI and other bodies, we have decided to withdraw our case in Supreme Court which was against the December 2010 AICTE Notification as most of the issues are resolved in the new Approval Process Handbook. We are now getting ready for a new era of trust and collaboration with the regulator.”

Earlier, addressing the conclave through Video Conferencing Prof. Jagdish Sheth, Charles H. Kellstadt Professor of Marketing, Emory University, USA, said: “Indian higher education needs a wholistic solution, and not frequent changes and crisis management. Crisis management is ok for short term, it can only temporarily fix the problem but won’t solve it.”

The summit hosted Panel discussions on ‘Industry 4.0: Changing Business Landscape - How Should B-Schools Respond?’ Speakers were Dr. Bhimaraya Metri, Director, Indian Institute of Management, Tiruchirappalli; Dr. Atish Chattopadhyay, Director, Institute of Management Technology, Ghaziabad; Shri Debabrata Ghosh, Director – Education and Skill Development, Advisory, KPMG India, Chennai; Dr. Parag Diwan, CEO, Paradigm Consultants and Resource Management P.
