Corruption leads to inactive Society

The base of corruption lies with the society and how the people deal with it in their day to day affairs to make their lives more convenient and easy. A corrupt society suffers from lack of moral values, a society not having a sense of ideals. Political elite become interest oriented rather than nation oriented. With a population of over 1.2 Billion India is the second most populated country in the world after China. Such a big population coupled with widespread illiteracy and the poor economic infrastructure has led to endemic corruption in public life.

Most of the times the “Chalta Hai” attitude makes the society tolerant towards corruption and corrupt practices of the powerful and mighty. A poor man doesn't get his share of food grains and sugar from Public Distribution System (PDS) as it goes to the open market. A poor cannot have him or his family treated in a government hospital due to corruption in maintenance of various departments .Medicines meant for the hospital find their way to open market. Police do not lodge an FIR of a poor and helpless person and even if lodged-no action is taken. It is the display of power and pelf in the society that is increasing the corruption and making everyday life miserable and thereby insecure.

India in the last couple of years has seen the most intense public outcry against corruption in the government system as a result of which the recent Assembly elections witnessed a unique trend with a completely new Aam Aadmi Party led(AAP) by RTI activist Arvind Kejriwal turning the table down for the ruling Congress party.

Corruption causes sluggish Economic growth

India which is being regarded as the rising economic super power also suffers from various type of corruptions which play a big role in hampering its economic growth. Many of the deals made by the government are in some or the other ways have been stricken with corruption involving higher officials. The corruption in the government offices runs from top to bottom.

Most of the public welfare schemes are not implemented as planned or some are not implemented at all. The recent example can be the tragedies involving the Mid Day meal scheme which if implemented honestly can play a great role in making more and more of the country’s rural population literate. Due to corruption in PDS the food which is meant for the poor goes to the black market. Many of the schemes which begin with noble planning end up in absurd implementations.

The lackadaisical attitude on part of the government when it comes to the implementation of public schemes proves that India is not a welfare state and here the governments and political parties wake up only during the times of elections. Removal of poverty and illiteracy are the main cornerstones behind country’s economic rise which is the duty of the state and the governments. Corrupt practices by top politicians and bureaucrats have brought shame to the country before the international community

Fodder scam, Coal scam, 2G scam, Land scam, Adarsh society building scam , Commonwealth Scam and the VVIP Chopper Scam are some  of the recent scams which have been  in the news in the last 2-3 years.

The unscrupulous powerful people are keeping the graft and black money in foreign banks. This money can change the face of Indian Economy which is reeling under inflation, lack of growth and lack of infrastructural development. A number of developmental projects are not able to kick-off due to lack of financial resources but thousands of crores of Rupees are spent on lavish living and wasteful expenditure.

The Road ahead

The people and the society of the democracy as diverse as India should not forget the morals of the great founding fathers of the democracy and they must have the will to get rid of corruption from within. The will to remove illiteracy and poverty is a must to fight corruption. There is a need to believe the values of ethics and morality in our lives. The role of the politicians in decision making should be minimized and there is also a need for electoral reforms to check the funding of the political parties during elections.

With the result of recently held Assembly elections across four states and the emergence of Arvind Kejriwal led Aam Aadmi Party in Delhi to power with a promise to root out corruption has come as an alarm bell for other political parties which have been in the power for the last 66 years since independence. This success of the Common Men party has come as a ray of hope for the people who have been feeling the heat of corruption at various levels of the system. There is no doubt that corruption is the root cause of various types of woes in India but having a will to fight with honest intentions, it can be fought. Fighting corruption may be difficult for the country but it is certainly not impossible.
