In a big relief to the PGDM B Schools, the Honble Supreme Court of India acting upon a petition filed by Education Promotion Society for India (EPSI) has asked the AICTE to continue as a regulatory body for the PGDM institutions.
In an order passed dated January 16, 2014 The Supreme Court of India stated that AICTE will be regulating the PGDM institutions for the year 2014-15, no further orders are required on this Application.
Education Promotion Society for India (EPSI) had filed an interim application in the Honble Supreme Court of India requesting it to direct AICTE to take necessary steps to initiate the process of granting extension of approval for the year 2014-15 in compliance of the Order dated 28/08/2013 passed by the Honble Supreme Court of India.
Earlier a regulatory vacuum had been created with regard to the PGDM institutions after the University Grants Commission (UGC)s announcement of a new draft guidelines to regulate thousands of technical colleges including engineering and management schools in the country. As per the guidelinesIndependent B-Schools, which follow their own curriculum and set their own course fees, were also required to obey the guidelines and seek affiliation to universities that function under the UGC and adopt their syllabus. The chaos which was created after the UGC guidelines had got some of the best B-schools, who have produced globally reputed CEOs and entrepreneurs to ask do we deserve this anarchy and apathy!
After the UGCs new draft guidelines faced opposition from educational bodies like EPSI, AIMS, FAMPEI and IAABS since the B schools were concerned about losing their autonomy,it was reported by the Business daily Mint on January 8, 2014, that MHRD has decided not to apply the UGC guidelines regulating the technical institutes to PGDM B-Schools.
According to Dr H Chaturvedi, Alternate President EPSI and Director BIMTECH, Greater Noida EPSI is intimating both AICTE and MHRD to initiate the necessary steps immediately.
