5 Leadership Lessons from Smriti Irani, our new HRD Minsiter

Its not Narendra Bhai Modi only who has risen from a poor Chai-wala(Tea vendor) to the coveted position of Prime Minister, Smriti Irani is another real example of exhibiting the power of democracy and woman empowerment.
Lot of fierce degree debate is going on in the political circles of our country on the education of Smriti Irani, our new HRD Minister. We believe it is not the qualification but the competence to deliver that matters. There have been number of well qualified post graduates and even PhD holders who occupied the various ministerial positions but delivered very little during their tenure. On the other hand not so qualified ones, with their great vision and leadership qualities effected many positive changes in our country. It is high time that we stopped this meaningless controversial debate but watch what the young new HRD Minister has in store to deliver and learn the inspiring leadership lessons from her.
After performing efficiently the reel role of Tulsi, the family manager of TV serial, Smriti Iranihas been assigned the real life lead role ofHonble HRD Minister in the new Government to manage the future of education across the country and infuse new ideas to make it conducive for future employment generation. This is the role she might have not herself anticipated during her reel life. Now the Tulsi of TV screen is the Tulsi of Indias front yard and assigned the most crucial responsibility of taking the Indian education out of the dilemma of uncertainty as well as of making it the meaningful part of life for a better India.

Sky is the limit: from McD to Minister HRD
Its not Narendra Bhai Modi only who has risen from a poor Chai-wala (Tea vendor) to the coveted position of Prime Minister, Smriti Irani is anotherreal example of exhibiting the power of democracy and woman empowerment. Smriti now the Minister of HRD, started her career as a waitress at McDonalds. She is one of such icons after whom the phrase Sky is the limit might have been formed. Smriti is a store of inspiring lessons that may not be available at IIMs.
The humble school girl of Delhi Middle class family in Smriti Irani who always wanted to study and become a civil servant had some typical astrological predictions made against her future while studying in Delhi. This left her more determined to continue working.
Her destiny took her to Mumbai where she managed well to struggle out of all the odds and emerged a winner of adversities. Contender of Miss India 1998 contest, Smriti worked at McDonalds Bandra outlet in order to support herselfas she also engaged herself in audition sessions to find the suitable role for her.
Her superb performance as the ideal Bahu Tulsi, her systematic projection of managing family affairs-indoors and outdoors, power of decision making soared her popularity higher and higher and she became the household name in the country. Scaling new heights of success Smriti could be well rated asa successful professional who emerged a winner in the cut throat competitive television industry.
What they teach as sales and marketing skills at IIMs and top rated B schools, Smriti started practicing it after 10thstandard when she began earning Rs 200 at that time by promoting a beauty product. What they dont teach us at IIMs has to be earned with our aspirations. If Smriti can have the aspiration of going high without doing MBA, what prevents you from achieving the goal. You can also do it and you know it well. The only need is to continue making efforts for it.

Calculated Risk Pay off: Took on Rahul Gandhi in Amethi. Lost but won!
Riding high to do something more fruitful Smriti took the decision to enter politics. The winning strategy took her through the odds. A Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament Smritis simplicity with high ambitious thought process is liked by all and that also led her to give a tough fight to Rahul Gandhi in Amethi in Lok Sabha elections 2014. Amethi has always been the secured fort for Rahul Gandhi from where he used to win with massive margin. But Smriti, the chosen candidate of BJP was able to turn the table in 2014 and the winning margin which was more than 3.5 lacs in 2004 and 2009 stood reduced to a mere 1.08 lacs in 2014 for Rahul Gandhi the projected PM candidate of Congress.
This was the first time when any candidate could become so close in ballot tally to the winning candidate in Amethi. But it happened and although she ran second in the election, the sudden spurt in voting pattern has gone to her credit. She has won the confidence of nation and has been rewarded with the ministerial seat of HRD where she plans to take more initiatives for a better future.
The instinct to win gets developed when you nurture it with the facts of your life. If Smriti can have the will to accomplish her cherished goal by counting her every step, you may also learn to move ahead with your risk calculation strategy of selecting the right B school that could shape your future.
Leaders Skills matter, Not merely qualification
Many responsible politicians find Smriti Irani not qualified enough to hold the portfolio of Minister HRD and as such are amused to criticize her. They forget in their frenzy that more than a formal qualification, this is the skill set that matters. Smriti is all set to prove her mettle in due course of tenure.
Had qualification been the only criterion for success, Narendra Bhai Modi would also not have become the Prime Minister of this largest democracy, nor could our earlier corporate and political leaders have achieved the feat which they did despite all the odds. Late Dhiru Bhai Ambani, founder of Reliance Industries; Nobel Laurette Rabindra Nath Tagore, Late Prime Minister Mrs Indira Gandhi to name a few, never completed their University Education but the world knows about them more than the people with high qualification are known across the Globe.
If we go by the tweets and criticism on her appointment, it would mean that only the person having expertise in the area should be given the Ministers portfolio undermining all other skills. It means MBA (IB) should be chosen to become the Foreign minister; A CA/ICWA/CFA/Economist should be found to become the Finance Minister; Person with defence back ground like Gen. V K Singh should be appointed Defence Minister. So no one without an MBA degree must be allowed to do business also, it implies.
Why then do we elect MPs? There are technocrats and civil servants who can run government better than elected representatives. But it doesnt happen and our elected representatives run the government since they understand peoples need and requirements. It is their leadership skill that goes a long way to frame policies for the future.
Smriti has developed her skill set despite many odds, get inspired from her and develop your leadership skills. Remember that not all good leaders are experts, but all good leaders know how to utilise the abilities of experts. To become a leader, your MBA will add to your professional skill but is not always mandatory to develop the leadership qualities.

Young India on the rise: Time to grab the opportunity
The young HRD Minister is only 38 years old and is full of enthusiasm. Smriti is all set to bring results. A symbol of woman empowerment she is the youngest woman in the Cabinet of the Union of India, who has proved herself in her political journey of 12 years.
She would work with more enthusiasm, open mind and quick decision making power as she is not carrying the load of biased ideology due to aging experience. She is a fresher and therefore will have an open mind to accommodate more views on different issues than the greybeard to lead the initiatives.
With her great initiative and proved energy level, she has shown the right path to youth by getting a berth in the Cabinet. The youth in India is supposed to grab the ensuing opportunity as young India is on rise. When young Smriti as a fresher can click the right opportunity, you should also shed the misconception that freshers dont get the opportunity as the theory doesnt hold good any longer.

Finally, believe in yourself You cannot nurture talent or showcase talent unless you believe in yourself. Smriti has given the message to have confidence in your being and utilize every opportunity to prove yourself.
The complex portfolio of HRD Minister would require her to face awide range of issues inherited by her. Now she will have to work with policies that would impact every family in the nation. She will also need to visualize the schemes which may prove to be more useful and do away the ones which may affect the country adversely. As an HRD Minister she is now looked upon to carry the ability to judge and to decide for a better future.
All this needs the self confidence and ability to perform. As a leader she has always proved to be a winner and this belief continues. She can channel good advice with her ability. Now the task before her is to improve the quality of teaching, invest more in Research projects to bring better results. She has to have the ability to judge which area of education should receive more funding.
She is not in the chair to convey academic expertise but has the more important role to persuade for the right kind of activity. When she goes to chair the meeting of directors of IIMs and IITs, she would need to focus on such ideas that could provide the results. She has got many experts and can hire even more, the need will be to utilize them to their optimum ability, manage among the priorities and ideas for long term education gain.
Young Smriti has always believed in herself and this has always given her the power to struggle and emerge as a winner in all the situations. She can do it certainly is what she believes and thats the reason that she is the Minister HRD Government of India. If you have all the confidence in your ability and have first hand trust on this belief, you may also solve the most crucial problems, no matter where and to what extent you have studied.
