From a PGDM B-school to a University: XIMB spawns Xavier University Bhubaneswar
Xavier University, Bhubaneswar (XUB) was inaugurated on July 7, 2014 at the new campus located at Kurki by the Chief Guest Honble Chief Minister of Odisha Shri Naveen Patnaik. XIMB is the flagship institution of Xavier University Bhubaneswar.
Twenty seven year old Xavier Institute of Management, Bhubaneswar (XIMB), a prominent PGDM B-school, has now spawned the Xavier University Bhubaneswar (XUB). Xavier University Bhubaneswar was inaugurated on July 7, 2014 at the new campus located at Kurki, near Bhubaneswar. The Chief Minister of Odisha Shri Naveen Patnaik was the Chief Guest of this function.
The University came into existence with the passing of the Xavier University Bill 2013 on April 5, 2013 in the Odisha Assembly and has generated tremendous buzz and anticipation ever since. Xavier Institute of Management, Bhubaneswar (XIMB), the 27 year old internationally reputed Business School will be the flagship institution of XUB. Apart from management education, XUB has proposed to set up other schools of higher learning in various areas like Public Policy, Sustainability, Finance, Media Education etc. and Centers of Research in Public Policy & others.
This move by XIMB management to transform into a larger XUB is indeed an interesting development in Indian MBA Education. The shift towards a University structure from a prominent national PGDM Institute can perhaps be seen in the light of confusion prevailing in the higher education space over PGDM Regulation and role of Regulators. With media reports claiming that MHRD is keen to bring all 13 Indian Institute of Management (IIM) together to form an IIM University, the PGDM B-schools would be at a disadvantage of sorts as they will be offering a diploma in management, and not a degree.
Earlier leading B-schools like NMIMS and Symbiosis also chose the same path at XIMB and transformed themselves into NMIMS University and Symbiosis International University respectively.
Located at a sprawling campus at Kurki, XUB offers the latest in infrastructure, technology and amenities to ensure an enriching educational experience. The university campus is also equipped with numerous sports facilities and houses highly qualified faculty members. Apart from offering MBA, MHRM and MBA-RM, XUB is also home to the School of Commerce which offers undergraduate courses such as B.Com Accounting, B.Com Finance, B.M.S. HR and B.M.S. Marketing.
At the inaugural function on July 7, after formally inaugurating the new university by unveiling the plaque and launching the website, Shri Naveen Patnaik addressed the gathering. He highlighted the commitment of the government to promote higher education in the state of Odisha. He raised the issue of improving the quality of higher education in the country and underlined the role of private universities in the same. He stressed on the need for a youth policy to harness the energy of a young and growing state like ours and wished Xavier University would develop research as one of its core competencies.
Fr. Paul Fernandes, Vice-Chancellor and Director, XUB welcomed the esteemed dignitaries and recalled his meetings with the Honble Chief Minister and the passing of the Xavier University Bill 2013 which paved the way for the establishment of the university. He proclaimed that Xavier University would embark upon a mission to develop professionals, well-formed and capable, to transform the society and be the light for the world.
He announced that Xavier University, in its quest to be the front-runner in research, had already admitted 27 doctoral students and highly qualified faculty to guide them. The university also starts as the leader in the country in terms of the technical infrastructure Data Center, Xavier One Portal, Xavier University Cloud, Video Book, EduERP, Data Analytics and Big Data Lab and a Social Media and Cloud Computing Lab, put in place with the help of leading Corporates. He reiterated the universitys commitment to creating a good, well-ordered society and expressed hope that the university would transform into Xavier Open University soon. He also expressed hope that the government would continue to provide support in terms of land and infrastructural funds so the university could expand to other parts of the region.
