DTE Maharashtra has announced the refund of registration fee to 1487 candidates out of 60363 applicants registered for MAH CET 2015
Apart from the dip in numbers DTE Maharashtra would also incur a loss of around Rs.14 lakhs on account of fee refund

Directorate of Technical Education (DTE) Maharashtra has announced the refund of registration fee to 1487 candidates out of 60363 applicants registered for MAH CET 2015 for admission to MBA/MMS programme 2015-17.

DTE received fee twice

Reasons for refund of registration fee have not been explained by DTE Maharashtra. It appears that due to one transaction remaining unsuccessful on account of some technical problem, or application fee not getting credited in DTE account and application form still showing ‘Payment not received’ against the column ‘Payment status’, candidates had to pay the application fee again. This has been the main reason for refund of amount to these 1487 candidates as DTE had made it clear that fee once paid would not be refunded. It applied to those applicants also who filled up some wrong information inadvertently in the application form and expected the refund.

Refund causing further dip in registrations

The refund implies a further dip in number of applicants who were included in the total number of registered candidates. Apart from the dip in numbers DTE Maharashtra would also incur a loss of around Rs.14 lakhs on account of fee refund.

MAH CET 2015 suffering from low registration number

In contrast to MAH CET 2014 which was held after the gap of one year and received very high number of registrations crossing even many All India MBA entrance exams, the registration number for MAH CET 2015 is comparatively low.

There are around 7000 MBA/MMS seats in Maharashtra B schools for All India candidates but the total number of registered candidates belonging to Outside Maharashtra State (OMS) category is only 2453 which is much less than the intake. Against the 37000+ seats for Maharashtra State (MS) category candidates, only 57910 have applied for MBA/MMS 2015-17 programmes. The ratio is less than 2 candidates per seat.

Not all registered paid for MAH CET 2015

Another key fact is that out of the total registered candidates not all of them have paid the registration/application fee for MAH CET 2015 but they have been included to add to the number of registrations.

JBIMS Admission Criteria: reason for low registration

The highly ranked B school JBIMS was hitherto a part of Centralized Admission Process (CAP) of DTE Maharashtra. No separate application was required to be filled up to apply for MBA/MMS admission in JBIMS Mumbai till 2014.

From the admission session 2015-16 JBIMS has been declared an autonomous B school that has its separate application process and admission criteria. Now candidates do not have to necessarily register for MAH CET 2015 and CAP round to be considered for admission in JBIMS as the B school will process the applications on its own and would accept only CAT 2014 or MAH CET 2015 scores. JBIMS closed its online admission application process on January 5, 2015. Candidates who have already applied with CAT 2014 scores or have kept their option open to consider their MAH CET 2015 scores, would be considered for shortlisting after declaration of MAH CET 2015 result. No other scores would be accepted by JBIMS. In either case JBIMS Has not asked a candidate to register and apply for MAH CET 2015 as it will have its own process of final admission round.
Since JBIMS is the major attraction for Maharashtra and outside Maharashtra state candidates, instead of applying to MAH CET 2015, number of them opted to apply direct to JBIMS with their CAT 2014 scores which were made available to them from Dec 27, 2014 onwards.

MBA admission opportunity more now

With less number of registrations, admission opportunity to MBA/MMS courses across Maharashtra B schools has increased. Apart from JBIMS, Maharashtra has hundreds of high ROI B schools as they have low fee structure and good placement record. Candidates, who have appeared in MAH CET 2015 and score well, can expect a good B school to pursue their management education dream in Maharashtra.
