G Srinivasa Rao, the  HRD Minister for the State of Andhra Pradesh is confident and his vision is to make IIM Vizag one of the premier institutes in the country. Although he has confirmed that 60 seats in the IIM-Visakhapatnam have been filled, the first PGP 2015-17 batch has taken-off with 50 boys and 4 girl students at IIM Vizag.  The total intake at IIM Visakhapatnam as earlier shared by IIM Bangalore with MBAUniverse.com, was supposed to be 70 students. It appears that more admissions are in process to complete the intake.

Dr Sushil Vachani, Director, IIM Bangalore lauded the efforts of the Union Government  and the Government of Andhra Pradesh for the encouragement and support to launch IIM Visakhapatnam as per the schedule. Dr Vachani thanked  Andhra University for being excellent hosts. According to him IIMB as mentor institute to IIM Vizag is excited to be part of IIM Visakhapatnam’s new journey.+

Dr. Sourav Mukherji, Dean Programmes; Professor Ganesh Prabhu, Chairperson, Career Development Services, and Professor Rajendra Bandi, Chairperson, Admissions and Financial Aid, IIM Bangalore,  had rich interaction with students satisfying their various queries at IIM Visakhapatnam inaugural ceremony.

IIM Visakhapatnam to have 3 year mentorship from IIMB
Dr. Sourav Mukherji, Dean Programmes at IIM Bangalore is of the view that it would take around one year to appoint a director for IIM Visakhapatnam as the Board of Directors would have to be constituted first. The recruitment would begin only after completion of this process. According to him IIM-Visakhapatnam would need 3 years of mentoring from IIM Bangalore.

Accordingly the students at IIM Visakhapatnam will get the best learning experience and placement opportunities as IIM Bangalore will mentor all activities at IIM Visakhapatnam till it moves to its permanent campus or IIM Visakhapatnam is able to handle these activities entirely on its own.

The faculty from IIM Bangalore would be delivering courses at IIM Visakhapatnam during the mentorship period and till IIM Visakhapatnam’s own faculty are recruited.

The overall design, quality and delivery of PGP course will be to the standards and with direct involvement of IIM Bangalore. Students at IIM Visakhapatnam  will see some of the best faculty members in the country today.

IIM Visakhapatnam: Rational Admission criteria
Out of the 6 newly announced IIMs, only IIM Visakhapatnam has the most rational admission criteria requiring a minimum CAT percentile of 90, instead of 96.3 needed by others to short list the candidates. The filling up of intake at IIM Visakhapatnam is the outcome of this rational admission policy. Other new IIMs are still struggling to fill their seats but have not reduced the requirement of minimum CAT percentile from 96.3 except IIM Sambalpur which has rationalized its admission policy.

The already registered candidates for IIM Andhra in CAT 2014 were asked to confirm their interest for admission to PGP at IIM Visakhapatnam. It was considered necessary as in CAT-2014, when candidates applied they had expressed their interest in IIM in Andhra Pradesh but now the location of IIM is known to be Visakhapatnam. Besides, due to relatively short time available for IIM Visakhapatnam admissions, the institute did not spend time on candidates who were no longer interested in IIM Visakhapatnam.

The admission offers in each IIM are independent of others and therefore accepting or rejecting an offer from any other IIM would not affect chances in IIM Visakhapatnam, or vice versa.

IIM Visakhapatnam: Fee structure
The tuition fee for IIM Visakhapatnam is Rs. 10.5 lakhs for 2 years. Other new IIMs have a fee structure between Rs.9 to 10 lakhs. Leading banks routinely offer educational loans at concessional terms as per Government of India guidelines for all IIMs including IIM Visakhapatnam.

Placement Opportunity at IIM Visakhapatnam
According to IIMB, ‘IIM Bangalore’s Career Development Services (CDS) Office will oversee placements of IIM Visakhapatnam during the mentorship period.’ Accordingly,  IIM Bangalore will carry forward its legacy of high placement packages at IIM Visakhapatnam.

Hostel accommodation at IIM Visakhapatnam
The temporary campus at IIM Visakhapatnam doesn’t have on campus hostel accommodation and candidates shall have to move to off campus hostel accommodation. Confirming this IIM Visakhapatnam says There is no hostel facility on the temporary campus. Therefore, off-campus hostel facility will be arranged for all students.’

Classes at IIM Visakhapatnam will be held at the temporary premises allotted to it at Andhra University campus and will continue at the temporary campus till the 300 acre campus of IIM Visakhapatnam gets ready.
