CAT 2016 exam on December 4 is the mandatory qualifying entrance exam for MBA/PGDM course 2017-19 not only for all the 20 IIMs but also for hundreds of other top B-schools in the country and prominent among them are FMS Delhi, MDI Gurgaon, SPJIMR Mumbai, IMI New Delhi, IMT Ghaziabad, BIMTECH Greater Noida, NITIE Mumbai, TAPMI Manipal, JBIMS Mumbai, K J Somaiya Mumbai, MICA Ahmedabad, XIM Bhubaneshwar, Great Lakes Chennai, LIBA Chennai, GIM Goa, LBSIM New Delhi among others.
The basic difference that lies in the admission criteria of the top B-schools is their actual cut-off and threshold qualifying scores in CAT 2016 at the 1st stage shortlisting. Although the qualifying CAT 2016 scores as announced by top IIMs like IIM Ahmedabad, IIM Bangalore, IIM Calcutta, IIM Lucknow, IIM Kozhikode, IIM Indore, FMS Delhi are not very high but the actual CAT 2016 score cut offs in these B-schools could go much higher in CAT 2016 at the 1st stage shortlisting.
You cannot expect to be shortlisted by IIM Ahmedabad, IIM Bangalore, IIM Calcutta, IIM Lucknow at the same percentile score in CAT 2016 as applied for IIM Nagpur, IIM Visakhapatnam, IIM Bodhgaya, IIM Sirmaur or IIM Jammu although the Admission notification for these IIMs has same qualifying CAT 2016 percentile in the shortlisting process and in certain cases the top rated oldest IIMs require even lower CAT 2016 percentile to qualify for 1st stage shortlisting than the new IIMs who are yet to prove their mettle in the management education arena.
IIMs need high percentile in each section of CAT 2016
You need to understand the complex shortlisting criteria and CAT score parameters prescribed by IIMs, FMS Delhi and other top B-schools to determine what else you need along with the high CAT 2016 scores to get shortlisted by the desired B-school.
In fact only a high score in CAT 2016 may not be taken as granted to cover all the essentials for admission in IIMs, FMS Delhi in 2017. Along with high overall percentile you must qualify as per the prescribed score of IIMs, in each of the 3 sections in CAT 2016. If you have done it, your score of 90 or 99 could be an asset for you else it is of no use.

You can be shortlisted by following top B-schools including IIMs, FMS, MDI if you score above 90 percentile in CAT 2016 and to be more precise between 95 to 100 percentile.
