Driven by leading global B-schools like MIT SLOAN and Michigan ROSS, greater emphasis on Experiential Learning is one of the key themes in MBA pedagogy in last decade. Key goal of this movement is to help prepare MBAs who are as proficient with ‘Doing’ and ‘Being’ skills as they are with ‘Knowing’ component of an MBA program. To highlight latest thinking and approaches on Experiential Learning theme, Global Business School Network (GBSN), a US-based consortium of leading B-schools, is organizing its 4th ‘Learning by Doing’ Summit, which is being co-hosted by SPJIMR Mumbai on April 4-5. LBD Summit will host speakers from leading B-schools like MIT Sloan, Tuck School of Business, Darden School of Business and George Washington University.
This is the fourth GBSN summit on Experiential Learning. Past summits have been hosted by The American University in Cairo (2015), by National University of Management in Phnom Penh, Cambodia (2016), and by Universidad ESAN and CLADEA in Lima, Peru (2018).
Emphasizing on the importance of Experiential Learning, Dr Dan LeClair, Chief Executive Officer, GBSN told MBAUniverse.com, “Advances in Technology will continue to make content more and more accessible. Meanwhile, cultural, economic, and regulatory differences will continue to matter, so context is important when applying the business content and concepts. Experiential learning helps learners to apply concepts and understand how they work in context.”
GBSN LBD Summit 2019 at SPJIMR will offer content sessions, panel discussions and hands-on guided workshop activities.
Summit will kick off on April 4 with welcome remarks by Dr Ranjan Banerjee, Dean, SPJIMR and Dr LeClair of GBSN. Thereafter, Prof Michellana Jester, Senior Lecturer Global Entrepreneurship Lab, MIT Sloan School of Management, USA will offer an introduction to Experiential Learning in Management Education. Prof Jester and Prof Kerry Laufer, OnSite Global Consulting program, Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth, USA will offer their views on ‘Improving Student Learning Outcomes through Experiential Learning.’ Prof Bryan Andriano, Executive Director, Global & Experiential Education, George Washington University School of Business, USA and Prof Preeta George, Chairperson, PGEMP Program, SPJIMR will talk about the theme of ‘Engaging with Company Partners.’ Other important sessions include ‘Role of Faculty in Experiential Learning.’
Other speakers at the LBD Summit include Prof Michaela Rankin, Deputy Dean of International at Monash Business School, Australia; Prof Ajay Adhikari, Sr. Associate Dean of Faculty and Research, Kogod School of Business, American University USA; Prof Aniha Brar, Deputy Dean of The Young India Fellowship at Ashoka University and Prof Deepa Krishnan, Adjunct Associate Professor & Head of the Abhyudaya Project at S.P. Jain Institute of Management & Research.
SPJIMR, which has been pioneering Experiential Learning methods in India, will be sharing their models and learnings at the conference. Explaining the importance of Summit theme, Prof. Malay Krishna, Chairperson - International Relations, SPJIMR said, “We live in a world in which long-cherished business models have come under threat. CEOs are increasingly asking for MBA's who are not just schooled in frameworks created 20 years ago, but can also critically examine existing business models and create new business models. The challenge is: what are the skills that you require to do this? And can you teach such innovation in a traditional classroom format? Leading business schools around the world increasingly believe the answer lies in Experiential Learning.”
When asked how SPJIMR is uniquely positioned for co-hosting this summit in India, Prof Krishna said, “SPJIMR offers a number of experiential learning courses because we realized the limitation of traditional classrooms in creating powerful learning contexts. Our ‘Personal Growth Lab’ or ‘ADMAP’ or ‘Abhyudaya’ are very successful experiential learning initiatives. So, we were naturally very excited at the prospect of co-hosting the learning-by-doing summit.”
Concurring with Prof Krishna, Dr LeClair added, “SPJIMR’s mission is to Influence Practice and Promote Value-based Growth. Experiential learning is at the core of its curriculum. SPJIMR has 5 non-classroom learning initiatives. One of the highlights of the Summit is that participants will take to the field to experience examples of SPJIMR’s non-classroom learning programs and initiatives. A follow-up session with a member from the GBSN Experiential Learning Committee will be held with participants 60 days after the summit.
