With increasing pressure to demonstrate ‘Impact’ within their communities, it is not surprising that Impact assessment is high on agenda of Business Schools in India and abroad. To raise awareness on this topic, and share EFMD’s BSIS framework, EFMD, one of the world’s top accreditation agencies, and SDMIMD Mysore, a leading Mysore-based B-school, are jointly holding a conference on the theme of “Measuring the impact of Business School Education in 21st century for Excellence in Quality” on April 17, 2019 in Bangalore.

Conference will be addressed by Prof Michel Kalika, Co-Director of Business Schools for Impact System (BSIS) at EFMD Global Network. Prof Kalika is a professor at the University Jean Moulin, IAE Lyon School of Management. He developed the BSIS or Business School Impact System methodology for FNEGE & EFMD.

Sharing the vital corporate perspective, Mr. Bhaskar Bhat, Managing Director of Titan Limited will be addressing the conference. Other speakers at the conference include Dr NR Parasuraman, Director, SDMIMD Mysore and Mr Nishit Jain, Special Advisor, EFMD Global Network. Senior corporate leaders, academic leaders and senior faculty from SDMIMD will also be speaking on the occasion.

The key discussion at the conference include conventional quality tools in B-schools and how these can be improved, the BSIS assessment scheme of EFMD for testing quality, corporate discussions on what they perceive as quality from B-schools, and practical issues in implementing these in B-schools.

Sharing the rationale for this initiative, Dr Parasuraman said, “One of the greatest challenges in any B-school is to ascertain the relative level of quality on various parameters like curriculum, pedagogy, projects, evaluation and overall preparation of students when compared to globally accepted standards. All major accreditation agencies look for the connection between the vision/mission of the school and its offering and execution. However, measurement of ‘Impact’ is a debatable issue and can possibly be done only by having clear yardsticks and seeing relative performance against it. There is no one answer and that is why the discussion on Impact is important.”

So what is EFMD’s BSIS, and how does it help a B-school in assessing its impact? According to EFMD website, “BSIS is the first comprehensive impact assessment tool for business schools that helps to demonstrate their impact upon its local environment – city or region and through Alumni internationally. This sophisticated measurement system assesses the qualitative and quantitative impact along seven dimensions and answers to the increased need of Management Schools to communicate with local and international stakeholders.”  Since its launch in 2014, BSIS has successfully assessed 32 business schools all over the world include IMD Lausanne and CEIBS Shanghai.

When asked about SDMIMD’s own impact on its stakeholders, Dr Parasruram said: “SDMIMD has benefited greatly from the accreditation process.  The approach has been to lay down clear parameters and consistently work on record-based improvement on these. The impact on students who are the principal stakeholders can be seen in their improved performance and subsequent growth. Much more work is going on and hopefully improvements will happen continuously.”

SDMIMD’s PGDM Program is accredited by ACBSP (Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs), USA. and by EFMD (European Foundation for Management Development), thus becoming the first institute in India to get the dual accreditation of ACBSP and EFMD – EPAS. With the intention of strengthening the PGDM program and providing students and faculty with international exposure, the Institute has tie-ups with several foreign universities for academic collaboration. SDMIMD has also entered into an agreement with TCS ION for launch of online courses through the latter’s platform.

European Foundation for Management Development (EFMD) is an international not-for-profit association, based in Brussels, Belgium. Europe’s largest network association in the field of management development. EFMD operates the EFMD Quality Improvement System (EQUIS), which is one of the leading international systems of quality assessment, improvement, and accreditation of higher education institutions in management and business administration. EFMD also runs the EPAS accreditation system for programmes as well as the EFMD Deans Across Frontiers development programme (EDAF) and the Business School Impact System (BSIS).
