ATMA Syllabus 2027: Section-wise Topics for Analytical Reasoning, Verbal and Quantitative Skills; Topic Weightage from Official ATMA Papers [PDF]

ATMA is conducted by the Association of Indian Management Schools (AIMS). ATMA official website is www.atmaaims.com. The table below summarizes key ATMA 2027 Exam highlights.

The ATMA exam subjects are the three skill areas that most MBA entrance exams test, but the ATMA exam syllabus for MBA does not include general awareness or business knowledge. As per the official ATMA Bulletin, ATMA does not require any specific prior knowledge of business or other subject areas; it is designed to assess your aptitude for higher management education. The syllabus for ATMA exam has three parts:

• Analytical Reasoning Skills (60 questions): verbal reasoning such as coding-decoding, syllogism and statement-inference, along with figure-based (non-verbal) reasoning.

• Quantitative Skills (60 questions): mostly arithmetic, along with data interpretation, geometry and symbol operations.

• Verbal Skills (60 questions): grammar and usage, vocabulary and reading comprehension.

Each subject is tested in two sections of 30 questions, and each section is given 30 minutes. As per the Bulletin, the sections need not be attempted in the serial order, and the order in the actual test may differ from the Bulletin table. The official topic list for Analytical Reasoning Skills on the ATMA website has 9 topics: Coding-Decoding, Linear Arrangement, Statement-Conclusion, Syllogism, Statement-Inference, Blood Relations/Family Tree, Circular Arrangement, Strong/Weak Arguments and Analogy.

The official ATMA papers show a much wider range. Nearly half of the 60 Analytical Reasoning questions, about 29, come from question types that are not named in this list:

• Figure-based (non-verbal) reasoning, about 11 questions: find the figure that comes next in a series, or count the triangles or rectangles in a figure. Mirror images and paper folding also fall in this group.

• Odd one out (classification), about 6 questions: pick the word, number or letter group that does not belong with the others.

• Number and letter series, about 5 questions: find the next term or the missing term in a series.

• Data sufficiency, about 4 questions: a question is followed by two statements, and you decide which statement or statements are enough to answer it.

• Arithmetic reasoning, about 3 questions: short reasoning questions that need simple calculations.

Among the named topics, statement and inference questions are the largest group, with about 8 questions. These give a statement and ask whether an inference is true, false, uncertain or irrelevant, or which of two inferences follows from it. Coding-decoding (about 5), syllogism, analogy, blood relations, and seating arrangement and ranking (about 4 each) make up most of the rest. Strong and weak arguments fall in the smallest group, with puzzles, at about 2 questions. Check the number of questions for each type in the table below.

The official topic list for Quantitative Skills on the ATMA website has 15 topics: Profit, Loss and Discount; Number System; Speed, Time and Distance; Algebra; Modern Maths; Quadratic Equation; Geometry; LCM and HCF; Average; Permutation and Combination; Ratio and Proportion; Mensuration; Logarithm; Binomial Theorem; and Percentage.

In the official papers, arithmetic is the core of this section. Number system (with HCF and LCM), profit and loss, interest, ratio and mixtures, speed, work, averages and percentages together account for about 43 of the 60 questions. Some question types that carry good marks are not named separately in the official list:

• Data interpretation, about 6 questions: questions based on data given in tables or charts.

• Simple and compound interest, about 6 questions.

• Time and work, about 5 questions.

• Symbol (sign-change) operations, about 5 questions: the meaning of signs such as +, −, × and ÷ is changed, and you find the value of the expression.

On the other hand, the higher-maths topics on the official list, such as algebra, quadratic equations, permutation and combination, logarithm and binomial theorem, account for only about 2 questions together with simplification, so the ATMA exam syllabus for MBA rewards strong arithmetic far more than higher maths. The official topic list for Verbal Skills on the ATMA website has 6 topics: Reading Comprehension, Grammar, Synonyms and Antonyms, Jumbled Sentences, Vocabulary/Word Meaning and Sentence Completion.

Grammar is the heart of the Verbal Skills section. In the official papers, about 34 of the 60 Verbal questions were fill-in-the-blank questions on grammar and usage, and about 10 more were sentence correction and error spotting questions. Together, grammar-based questions make up about 44 of the 60 questions:

• Fill in the blanks, about 34 questions: choose the correct preposition, article or word (for example, few or little) to complete a sentence.

• Sentence correction and error spotting, about 10 questions: pick the sentence that is correctly written, or the one in which an article or a verb is used wrongly.

• Vocabulary, about 9 questions: synonyms, antonyms, one-word substitution and idioms.

• Reading comprehension, about 7 questions: questions on the main purpose of a passage, the author’s view, and facts stated in it.

Many aspirants prepare for ATMA along with other MBA entrance exams such as CAT, CMAT and MAT. The ATMA entrance exam syllabus overlaps with all three, but there are important differences:

• No general awareness: CMAT has a General Awareness section and MAT has an Economic and Business Environment section; ATMA has neither.

• Data interpretation inside Quant: CAT has a separate DILR section. In ATMA, data interpretation (about 6 questions) is part of Quantitative Skills, and data sufficiency is part of Analytical Reasoning.

• Figure-based reasoning: about 11 of ATMA’s 60 Analytical Reasoning questions are figure-based, so practise them separately even if you are preparing for CAT 2026 or CMAT 2027.

• Faster pace: ATMA gives about 1 minute per question, compared with 1.8 minutes in CMAT.
