IIM Lucknow had sent the press release on July 29, one day before releasing the official CAT 2017 notification in news papers on July 30, 2017 and confirmed what was carried by MBAUniverse.com 3 days ahead of national media publication. The CAT notification announced on July 29 the CAT 2017 exam date as November 26, a fact which was published by MBAUniverse.com on July 26 at 7.45PM.

Convener of CAT 2017 exam, Prof Neeraj Dwivedi, faculty and admission chair at IIM Lucknow has already clarified about the CAT exam pattern and CAT testing window which more or less remains the same as that of previous year.

Major points creating confusion in the minds of CAT aspirants due to earlier news items in the media have also been cleared. MBAUniverse.com was the first to announce that CAT 2017 exam notification would be released on Sunday July 30, 2017 and the CAT 2017 exam will be held on November 26, 2017 in a single day and 2 sessions of 3 hours each in morning and afternoon.

IIM Lucknow has kept the CAT 2017 exam pattern and testing window on the same pattern and the structure and content of CAT 2017 remains the same.

  1. CAT 2017: Exam on Nov 26,  Testing window remains same
    CAT 2017 testing window remains unchanged. It will be a single day 2 sessions exam on Sunday, November 26, 2017. Candidates have been requesting the CAT convening IIM Lucknow to provide 2 days testing window, but the request has not been acceded to. 

    Now there will be 2 sessions on the same day on November 26, 2017 – Morning and afternoon.

  1. CAT 2017 Exam pattern
    Each of the 2 sessions in CAT 2017 will be of 3 hours duration. Like last year, there will be individual sectional time constraint of 1 hour for each section. Candidates will have to attempt 1 section in 60 minutes failing which they will automatically be switched to next section.

3 sections in CAT 2017 will consist of: There will be 3 sections in CAT 2017
Section I: Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension
Section II: Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning
Section III: Quantitative Ability  

  1. Type of questions in CAT 2017
    Apart from MCQs, CAT 2017 will contain non-MCQs type of questions also. According to CAT Centre 2017 ‘Some questions in each section may not be of multiple choice type. Instead, direct answers will have to be typed on the screen.’

    These Non-MCQs will not carry any negative marking for wrong answers and were present in last year CAT also with a weightage of 25% to the total questions.

  1. CAT Registration fee increased: Guide before August 9
    CAT 2017 online registration this year opens in the second week of August. CAT 2017 registration fee has been increased to Rs.1800/- from Rs.1700/- last year.

    The CAT online application process will begin at 10AM on August 9 and will close on September 20 at 5PM. IIM Lucknow will launch and activate the CAT 2017 registration guide and Video on CAT website iimcat.ac.in to help the CAT aspirants to complete their registration and application process a few days before the CAT registration begins.

  1. List of 20 IIMs with management programmes
    There are 20 IIMs and a comprehensive list of these IIMs is available on CAT website alongwith their 32 different management programmes offered by them. You will need to choose the preferred IIM and preferred programme while finalizing the CAT 2017 registration. So make your wish list now by perusing the different programmes published on CAT website.

    Since candidates will be shortlisted for all the programmes on the basis of CAT 2017 scores. So, before you apply for CAT 2017, you must visit the websites and/or read programme advertisements of the concerned IIM and specific programmes to ensure which programmes you want to apply for, eligibility requirements and admission processes.

    This will help you to finalise your registration process as you need to choose and fill up the names of IIMs and their programmes in order of preference so that you may be considered by respective IIM as per your choice, when shortlisted.

  1. More Test cities to choose from
    As against previous year, CAT 2017 will have more test cities. There are 140 exam cities for CAT 2017. In 2016 CAT had 138 test cities and in 2015 they were 136. The test venues may go beyond 400. The move will increase accessibility.

    The test cities for CAT are on increase since 2014. For the first time in 2014 the exam was held in 99 cities at 354 testing sites as against 40 testing cities with 76 testing centres in earlier CAT years. This number was further increased to 136 test cities and 360 test centres in 2015 and since then it has been increasing every year.

    The CAT 2017 convener Prof Neeraj Dwivedi, faculty IIM Lucknow has planned more test cities to make the one day exam more aspirants’ friendly and to cope with the high number of CAT 2017 test takers across the country.

  1. Choice of 4 test centres but No self selection
    CAT 2017 aspirants have been offered the facility to fill up 4 preferred test cities out of the list of 140 test centres. While CAT Centre 2017 will try its best to allot the first preferred test centre, it can allot other test centres also.

    According to IIM Lucknow, ‘Candidates will be given the option to select 4 Test Cities in order of preference. Test Cities and Centres will be assigned to the candidates only after the last date for CAT 2017 registration and hence candidates need not rush to block slots and cities in the initial days of registration.’

  1. CAT 2017 Admit Card: Download facility from Oct 18
    The queries like – how and when the CAT admit card can be obtained, what instructions they would contain, have been answered by IIM Lucknow. The CAT 2017 convener has informed ‘After submission of Application, candidates will be permitted to download their Admit Card from 18th October, 2017 onwards, till the date of test.’
  1. CAT 2017 official Mock: Oct 18 onwards
    CAT 2017 official Mock test will be released by IIM Lucknow on October 18. According to CAT Centre 2017, ‘Tutorial to understand the format of the examination will be available on the CAT website from 18th October 2017. Candidates are advised to work on the tutorials, available on the website, well in advance.’
  1.  CAT 2017 Exam continues with On screen Calculator
    CAT 2017 exam will provide facility of on screen calculator to help the candidates avoid wastage of time on basic calculations. According to CAT Centre 2017 ‘we will allow use of basic on-screen calculator for computation.’

Common Admission Test (CAT) 2017 is the mandatory entrance exam for admission to MBA/PGDM 2018-20 programmes in all the 20 IIMs, FMS Delhi, SPJIMR Mumbai, MDI Gurugram, IMI New Delhi, IMT Ghaziabad, JBIMS Mumbai, TAPMI Manipal and other hundreds of highly ranked B-schools in India. One or other older IIM conducts CAT every year. This year the responsibility to convene CAT is assigned to IIM Lucknow.
